Yellow Gouldian Hen With Blue Head Feathers?

Post by Chris103 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 2:42 pm

I have a BH-PB-YB Gouldian hen with at least two bright blue feathers at the edge of her white (black) mask. Has anyone seen this before? She also has a few green feathers on her back which I have read about. Is it just the Single factor not being able to fully supress the green genetics...as in Black (gray) headed SFYB males that have solid black feathers in their mask? Her mate Is one of those males. Should I expect their chicks to have this trait as well? They are on their second clutch of eggs now, after not feeding their first clutch. I would take pictures but I don't want to disturb them at the moment, eggs are do to hatch any day! Thanks in advance for any input on the subject!

Your SFYb AKA SF Pastel has a gray head with black feathers?
A picture would help visualize what your describing better

Yes. He has the typical grey head that BH-PB-SFYB males have but with a few (1-3) solid black feathers on the top at the edge of his mask, just before the blue ring around his mask starts. I hope that helps visualize it a little more. I can't take any photos right now since they are on eggs but I'll get some when I can. I know I have seen a picture on the forum of a male that looks like mine, in the genetics section I believe. I'll search for the post!

This Is the thread with the picture of a male that looks just like mine ....the one with black feathers in the mask. My male may have one or two more black feathers than the one pictured, but they are all right next to each other, like the one pictured.

My YB hen with blue feathers on her head looks just like the mentioned males, but with blue where the black Is on the males. Hope that makes sense lol!

Well only one of four eggs hatched (looks like a dilute). It appears they are feeding the little guy so far. They are a young pair so I hope they keep it up this time. If the chick makes it, it will be interesting to see if He has any odd head feathers since both parents Do.

Here Is a photo of the hen. I took the picture on an iphone so the quality and color isn't very good. In person, the feathers are bright blue. She must have also just lost a blue feather or two, there are usually several...all in the same spot. Hope this helps shows what I was trying to explain! Pics of their chick are to follow.

Can anyone tell what color this chick will be? I was thinking a Dilute aka SFYB or maybe a normal. It would be a hen if normal GB. Harder to tell with only one chick in the nest and no others to compare it to!

Cute chick
I wouldn't disturb them too much especially with only one chick in the clutch. They seem to be feeding this one so maybe they have figured it out. :)
Best of luck

Thanks! I'm really trying to let them Do their thing but it takes a lot of self control :o ! I had to put a bunch of stuff in the garage and after an hour or so the commotion brought them out of the box. That's the first time I've ever seen them both out of the nest, so I thought I would sneak a few pictures while I had the chance. Luckily they are very calm birds, I can stick my hand in the cage without them flying around. Of course no hands in the cage now. Any idea on the chicks color? I'm still leaning towards a dilute/SFYB.

Anyone have any ideas or theories about my yellow hen's blue head feathers? Has anyone seen this before? I know its only a few feathers but It has me stumped on the genetic end of things. Oh and their chick Is still going stong, I think they've got the hang of it this time!

Just an update. Both parents were out of the box today so I snapped a few quick photos of the chick. 12 days old and growing fast! I was thinking it was going to be a SFYB but now I'm thinking DF. They have a 50% chance of having yellow males and females, 25% SFYB males and 25% green hens. Odds are in favor of yellow, since its Not a GB.
Image
Hoping this will be a large robust bird since its the only chick. My other pairs always have at least three.
