What is Sheena's Mutation?

Post by LuxandLolita » Thu Jan 30, 2014 11:37 pm

Well of course Sheena will be the first bird i've had that WASN'T a Normal Grey... This i know for sure. I believe her to be Fawn, But the pictures kind of wash out her pretty coloring. I'm still posting them...
and pardon the messy cage, Their perches and such are going to be washed tonight
Image
Her wings are absolutely beautiful, i still can't figure that out

Compared to NG Lux, Yes he's a little plucked, Tahny used to pluck at him.. ;-;

Truest picture to her coloring:

Id like to know too, she's pretty! Florida silver? I recently got a fs male that I thought was fawn as well. I have a silvery fawnish hen that looks a little like yours.

I was just going to say (but Rin beat me to it :-) ) that she looks sort of silvery in colour. Were both parents normal gray?

I've no idea what her parents are. I got her from a pet store, she's not that toned light color, she's more of a creme and beautiful at the least.. I know she's less thenn a year old because she's still getting striped tail feathers and none of them were supposed to be older then 15 months according to paperwork. She was in with a NG male, two NG females and one Slipt BB male... I was almost tenpted to get him too, but didn't...

The tear looks rather dark for a Florida Silver though it is possible, her tail is very light. Usually Florida silvers the tear is almost the same shade as the body, maybe a tone darker. she may have other genes at play...she looks split to either CFW or Lightback...that white lacing on the edges of the wing feathers is a marker for either. If you breed her and you get FF or FS young that would mean she carries the gene.

Well i don't plan to breed her for maybe another year, once she goes through season laying, but not any time soon. I do plan to get another nice male so I'll have to keep an eye out for one similar to her, she's noy quite as dark as most of the photos show but not quite as light as the pics that wash her color out. The lacing is stunning, i've seen fawn birds.. She's different, must be split... I thought CFW was sex linked? I haven't been keeping up with my zeb genetics... Please pardon any typos

Sorry about that Katie...looking at the feathers more so than the sex of the bird, CFW and Lightback are both sex linked hens can not be split to either. They are either visual or not. Retracting the split to statement. She has silver in her, she also looks more of a Recessive silver than a Florida silver... http://www.efinch.com/species/rszeb.htm

Are we agreeing on RS F? I'll light take more pics when it's nit so cloudy... More natural light, hopefully more natural colors. She's quite beautiful.
Now, recessive silver is week recessive... So they can be split?

Recessive silver is recessive, so yes birds can be split to RS.

F being fawn...she is not fawn

OB...no orange in the tail bars only silver. Under her wings unless there is orange there I would say no to split to OB

not lightback since the tail bars are silver not full strength.

She is likely either recessive silver or Florida silver.... from efinch.com "The Recessive Silver looks very much like the single factor Florida Fancy (called Florida Silvers). The Florida Fancy however is generally a lighter colored bird and the diluted black markings are generally lighter in color than in the Rec. Silver. In the males the breast bar can be diluted to nearly the color of the wings and back. It can be more difficult to determine the hens however. Between the Rec. Silver, the Dominant Silver and the single factor Florida Fancy, the hens can all look very similar, but will all have different methods of inheritance."

Below are two Florida silver hens...notice the tear...it is faded to the color of the body feathers, FS will have tears that are almost visible.

Compare it to the Recessive silver hen on efinch http://www.efinch.com/species/rszeb.htm

Only way to see what she carries is if she is FS and you breed her to a normal then you should get some visual FS in clutches...if recessive silver then the offspring will be spilt to RS. FS is co Dominant.

She's bit quite that dark out has that strength in color, as well as the tail is powder faded. I'm going to get better pictures yet

Did you look under her wing for orange?

Buying from the store you often do not know exactly what the bird carry until you breed them.
