I have seen female yellow back goudians that have a spotted red head. Does anyone know if this is an inherited trait or not? Will future generations of females be spotted head or will they have a full red head?

From what I've seen at all the bird marts, the YB hens don't have a pure red, clean looking head. I'm not sure I've seen spotted, but do you mean like this, although this is a yellow head:
Beautiful tear dropped head by the way.

Paul (poohbear) may be the best one to answer this as he has had gouldians for quite a while.

No not like the picture it's much more spotted and the colour is not full.

Chris, I have a hen like that. Her RH has been very spotty (not very attractive at all). She is now molting, and her head is showing much more red. I'm hoping that it turns out looking more even. She was young when I bought her, so I'm thinking that future molts will just get better and better.

Some take a couple of moults before attaining correct colours.

Sally it is interesting that you say this because I have read elsewhere about this that future molts would look more filled in.

Chris, here are two photos that show how the hen's head is filling in. The first photo was in May 2007, the second one May 2008. Sorry I couldn't get a better photo, she doesn't like the camera.

On April 19 I made a post labeled My New Gouldian. If you would go back and look at the picture I posted (sorry I could not post again. )
That is my yellow back and I think it has a beautiful head. IT is one year old.

I have a female yellowback and 2 male yellowbacks and the males red heads both are completely filled in where the female's orange head colour is splotchy.
