Hi to all ,

Curiosity has gotten the better of me with this one

I have a normal grey pair of Cherry finch who have produced 2 normal and 1 fawn chick

From what I understand fawn is sex linked and can only be reproduced from the cock bird being fawn .
The only other possibility is that both parent birds even though they are visual normal's are split for fawn to produce a fawn chick

Any genetic expert's/wiz kids on the forum that could shed some light on the subject for me .

Fawn if sex-linked:

you will need a visual or split to fawn male and a visual fawn hen to produce visual fawn offspring of both sexes.

if you only have a split to fawn or visual fawn male the offspring will be visual fawn hens and split to fawn males

if only the hen is a visual fawn and the male does not visually show fawn or carry a split to fawn gene then you will only get split to fawn males only.

Hens can not be split to fawn or a sex-linked gene.

if the fawn mutation is recessive like it is in javas (one of the few birds it is not sex-linked in) then you need both parents to be visual or split to fawn to give visual fawn offspring.

You'r explanations for a fawn chick from 2 normal gray parents tells me that I have a cock split for fawn , cannot tell if the chick is a hen or cock yet but will update any changes just to be sure of what genes the parents are carrying .

If dad is split to fawn and mom is not a visual fawn the fawn baby is a hen.

If males that are either a visual or split to fawn, paired with a non-visual (not fawn) hen your offspring will be visual fawn hen and split to fawn males.

Hens can not be split to fawn....to get visual fawn males mom has to be a visual fawn and paired with a visual fawn or split to fawn dad.
