Powder Blue Gouldian versus regular blue

Post by brandon_cindy6 » Sun Jun 15, 2008 9:24 am

Hello-I am purchasing a couple blue backs and the breeder I spoke with told me that there is indeed a powder blue and a blue back. At first i just thoght she was calling the pastel male powder blue. However she has males and females that are powder blue. Some of them have white breasts (my understanding is pastel males only have purple breasts. I also discussed her silvers with her. she stated her silvers are white white. I just wanted to discuss that to try to ensure when she stated powder blue she wasnt referring to silvers.

If anyone has any knowlege of this let me know. Do you think she just has 2 blue bloodlines..One that is more of a powder blue, versus the darker turqoise blue?

Please let me know your thoughts

I have some gouldians, but am somewhat inexperienced in the genetics of them. I did go to a bird mart yesterday and I saw some blues and silvers. I only saw one color of blue. The silvers were not pure what so I am not sure about that. I know we have several experts on gouldian colors, so perhaps soon someone else will chime in.

I see how you're confused, I am too.
You're right, only a pastel blue can have a purple breast and they can only be cocks. Some silvers I've seen are very light blue, but some are bred to be almost pure white in the BH, WB, SB.
Sounds to me that she has two different types of silvers backs....the pure white, and the very light blue variety that she is calling "power blue".

I think you would have to visually see her birds to determine what she has.

I have a silver male, a blue male and a "sky blue" male. I also have a blue female. I have seen a silver female but I have not seen sky blue / pastel females.

Here's what I have (hope it helps) -

I just wanted everyone to know I purchased the bird and received it. It is definately a silver back. He is powder blue with turqouise around his neck. She must have to strains of silvers. The other must be white.

Cool, post a pic please!

I've been trying to get my friend to send me a pic of his pair of all white silver backed Gouldians.

Here is my friend's silver backed pair. The male is in obvious moult at the moment, but I swear he is beautiful when he is in good feather. Even the hen is looking at him differently!

My silver male looks just like the photo of the silver posted above by Wonder Wooer.

Yes, what the breeder is referring to as a "powder blue" is indeed a silver. I have had silvers that have a blue sheen to them...it is very pretty! And then I have silvers that are pure white.
