What will Happen?

Post by Societies&Zebras » Mon Apr 06, 2015 10:04 pm

I am in the future planning on getting this NG male from a breeder for Celeste to have as her mate. I have already chosen him and she has reserved him for me. He is NG/with unknown splits. His parents were both NG so possible splits? My female is CFW, so if they had babies how would that work? Would the babies come out Pied since mom is white and dad is NG? I've heard of a white female zebbie mating with a NG zebbie and producing Pied chicks. I need fellow finch friends to help with genetics as I am not so good.
Hi I'm Zachariah.

delray I know this sounds dumb, but I needed to check Celeste for mites as I was checking for red mites. (I sometimes check to make sure they aren't mite infested). Well as I picked Celeste up she started making a noise coming from her. It sounded like squeaking. She wasn't open mouth breathing just heard a squeaking noise. Am I overreacting? or? :?

delray I hope I don't bother you with all these nervous comments worrying all the time. I get nervous so much. I am treating my other finches and worry about Celeste getting ASM or a infection. #-o

No your not bothering me. I enjoy helping other member with questions. I would be pretty nervous as well if I was treating my finches for ASM.

Societies&Zebras Just answering you a little on your first question. If you put a CFW female with an NG male you will get all NG babies but the MALES will be split to CFW(meaning that THEIR offspring if paired w/ a CFW female could be CFW), UNLESS the male is split for CFW. And even though pied gives you more white on the bird, CFW and Pied are two different mutations. (check out efinch.com VERY informative, I learned a lot!) So in order for you to have pied babies one of the parents would have to carry the pied gene. As far as if the NG male you are getting if he is split for CFW then you could get NG males NG females, CFW females, or split for CFW Males, or CFW males (i only know this because my Charlotte is CFW and mY Melvin is NG so i asked these same questions) if you check out MiaCarters page petfinchfacts.com she has a P--- something wheel that will give you the genetics on what you could get depending on the parents.
and as far as pied, even though Celeste is white she is CFW white not pied white, (unless she had pied parents, but I'm pretty sure she is a CFW) so the chicks won't be pied, unless one of the parents carries pied. So you will get all NG babies if you mate these two UNLESS there are genes in there that you are unaware of... for instance, my CFW female and NG male made two Fawn babies...go figure.... so unless you REALLY know the parentage, and genetics from the line... there's really no way of knowing, and even then (again ask MiaCarter) she KNEW her birds parents AND grandparents, and her NG couple had a Fawn baby!!! lol so sometimes, even if you KNOW genetics like our Wonderful, Zebra Guru Cindy (which Please if I am wrong at all Cindy, in any of this please let me know, as I am still learning too!!) sometimes... you just never can tell!!! But if you do mate them keep us posted!!! And post pics..

Oh, also, that noise you were talking about, I had to catch my bird and he did the same thing to me...let out this AWEFUL loud SCREECH like I hurt him..(I KNOW i didn't because he was cupped in between my two hands very losely) but it scared me enough that I let him go... which I think is the point of the noise, it's just a "GET YOUR DAMN HANDS OF ME" noise. but as long as you aren't squeezing, the bird, and he/she seems fine otherwise the noise is just a normal i dont' want to be picked up noise.. and i'm sure they are fine, but of course as ALWAYS BE CAREFUL!! they are very small, and althought hardy tough birds, very fragile compared to our "Giant hands"

Thanks a lot Inlovesorange all of this was very helpful. The noise wasn't a screech at all. It was more of a squeaking wheezing sound.
