Alumina male? Help me ID my guy, please :)

Post by emb12385 » Sun Apr 19, 2015 11:08 am

I have the hardest time identifying mutations. From the color charts I've seen, my guy looks to be alumina, but what better place to confirm?! Thanks!

Sorry about the dark picture. Y'all know how hard these busybodies are to photograph.

Managed a picture with flash. He paired off with a normal grey hen and they had four little ones that fledged about three weeks ago. I'm so curious to see how they color out. I'm so new at this and have no idea how to tell what they will look like. I'm not even sure which of the babies are male and female. I'll see if I can grab some pictures of the kids and maybe y'all can help me with that, too!

WOW!!! I have a male who looks just like him and a female who looks just yours as well. Their first clutch produced two striking grey males and a beautiful almost white female. The most resent clutch I have one of each but I am unsure of the gender because they have yet to fledge from the nest.

Ok, so after digging, he's a CFW cock. Crossed with a normal hen, they produced a normal cock, normal hen, CFW hen, and then the white female with no tear marks. Why is she missing her tear marks?

CFW cock. Over the years I've bred lots of them but at present I only have one. This remaining cock I've paired with a pied split BC hen but they have yet to produce CFW cocks, just hens and lots of normal grays.

emb12385 So I'm a little late, but yes your male is a CFW. Females cannot be split for this as it is a sex linked gene, so any female will be visibly white. How old is the hen with no tear marks? there are some mutations that the tear marks get dilluted or disappear. She's a cutie though!! I must say they made BEAUTIFUL babies, and your birds are gorgeous! It's funny, the males are suppose to be the "pretty" ones in the bird world, but I have 4 baby Zebs 3 males and 1 female, and she is an NG female, but I think she is so beautiful!!! She has like a "buff" coloring on her belly and flanks, no pure white, same as the white next to her tear marks, it's more "off" white. And I think she is GORGEOUS, as I think your white hen is gorgeous!! But looks like you found out what your mutations are, but not sure if anyone mentioned this but check out efinch.com he has a LOT Of info on mutations and the genetics behind it, you may even be able to find an explanation for your birds lack of tear marks. Maybe your Mama hen had a split. to pied, or white or something... But he's very knowledgeable, and I had a questions on my fledges and I emailed him, he got back to me the next day with an explanations (my white female and NG male had brown babies...go figure) But he explained it to me in a way i understood, so... 90% of the finch people you come across are awesome and supportive, so good luck, and ask away!!! congrats on all your babes, they are beauties!
BTW, What's Alumina? I've never heard of that?

CFW is sex linked if paired with a normal gray hen you can get visual CFW hen offspring, normal gray hen offspring and normal gray males split to CFW

for a list and description of all the mutations we have in the U.S. go to efinch.com http://www.efinch.com/varieties.htm

I also noticed that the father is missing part of a tear on one side, he may be carrying pied which may account for the hen without tears. What color was the beak on the all white no tear baby..and can I see the front and back of the mother bird?
