Please help ID baby Sprout

Post by Nicci_M » Sun May 10, 2015 9:26 am

Well, I thought Sprout was a female Fawn. Apparently I was wrong because "she" started molting... So, here I am trying figure out what little Sprout might be lol!
I was told that mom is a Fawn & dad is a NG & have attached pictures.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Nicci.

Not an expert on mutations, but I would hazard an opinion, that Sprout, is no girl, lol :-D

What a cutie.

cindy will be your best bet at identifying the little squirt, I mean Sprout, but I'd hazard a guess that dad may be split to Fawn so the chick is a Fawn male. He could also possibly be lightback. You might check out www.efinch.com where Roy Beckham has some pretty awesome pictures of the zebra mutations and identify the little one that way.

lovezebs,
I'm not sure what happened, I submitted a response to your message a few minutes ago but it has vanished lol!

Any how, here goes (again) lol.

Since I don't know anything about Felix or Fiona other than what I was told, coupled with the fact that I'm a "newbie" I guess one could say that I learnt a lesson: Do not assume anything when it comes to these little treasures lol!! What I know for sure is that Sprout is a very sweet natured little boy & I adore his song. I'm especially amazed at how quickly he learnt it!

Colt,

Thank you Colt, I'll definitely PM Cindy & ask her opinion. As for pictures on efinch.com, they're awesome for sure & the descriptions are very detailed but I tend to get "lost" & feel overwhelmed with the information that I'm no wiser by the time I'm through reading lol!

In an earlier post Cindy identified two of my zebs, one being a light back & I must say, Sprout certainly appears as though he could also be. This may be a silly question to most, but if Sprout is a silverback, does it mean that the gene is recessive in either one of his parents..?

your baby is a boy!!! Males can take a while to color out depending on the mutation.

Definitely a cock, looks like a fawn but he hasn't finished molting yet.

I too have a young Isabel which for a month I thought was a hen. He turned out to be a cock and it looks like he will be an OB after molting.

Hey Nicci, the coloring is tough but it does look like he could be a fawn, and I believe fawn is on the same chromosone as CFW, which means if he IS fawn that means that dad has to be split to fawn...I think... correct me oh wise ones as I am still learning myself, but he looks to be turning into a handsome young boy!!!

Fawn is sex linked, so is CFW, CCFW, Lightback.

Sex link mutations 101.... males carry the gene, they can be either full visual or split to the gene. They can not be full visual and split to the same gene at the same time.

Hen are only visual, they do not carry the gene, they can not be split to a sex linked gene but they will give split to the sex linked gene sons.

A father that is visual or split to a sex linked mutation not paired with a visual sex linked hen will give visual hen and split to the sex linked gene males

CFW male + a NG hen = CFW hens and NG/cfw males

a Visual to the sex linked gene hen not paired with a visual male will give NG hens and NG/to the sex linked males.

CFW hen and NG male = NG hens and NG/cfw males

a visual (to the sex linked gene) paired to a visual (Sex linked gene) will give 100% visual (sex linked gene)

CFW hen and CFW male = 100% CFW males and females

A visual hen paired with a split to the sex linked gene male will give you NG hens, visual (sex linked gene) hens, split to males and visual males.

CFW hen and a NG/cfw = NG and CFW hens, NG/cfw and CFW males

NG is normal gray
