A fawn?

Post by Dokh » Tue Jun 16, 2015 7:19 pm

Hi,

Wherever I read about the owl finches, they say they have blueish-greying dark legs. But my hen actually has pink legs. I know they say owl fawns (which is a mutation) often has pink leg and a lighter shade to their colours. But my hen doesn't have the lighter shade, just the pink legs. Is she considered a fawn anyways?

What is strange thought is that from what I read about this mutation, only the male can display a ''split'' mutation, while the hen can only appear normal or fawn.

That is very interesting. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer. I hope someone else does.

Dokh - That's a great question!

I've never seen a normal owl finch with pink legs and the only split to fawn males I've had had lighter grey legs (definitely not the fawn pink....although the split to fawn males I had were brothers, so they wouldn't be a good example of genetic possibilities for leg colors in split-to-fawns.) But it's possible that some could have a more pinkish tone. (Albeit not as pink as a true fawn)

As a sex-linked mutation, females can't be split - just as you acknowledged.

My guess would be that you have...
- a split to fawn MALE (perhaps he's just young and hasn't started acting male yet)
- a fawn FEMALE with feather color that's simply darker than usual for a fawn.
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

MiaCarter

Thanks for your answer,

Yeah maybe it's simply a fawn with a darker shade to her feather even though she has exactly the same shade than a normal owl. But for your other option, it is without a doubt a female she had several clutches already, she even was eggbound once but she's fine now.

I'll try to provide a picture anytime soon of her with her bonded male who is normal for comparison of the shades.

Not that I know genetics AT ALL (i actually learned quite a bit when my Zebras had their clutch, but Biology Major, Genetics Genious I AM NOT), let alone Owl genetics.... however I LOVE Owl Finches... I can't wait til I can get a pair... so I'm more or less just been greedy, because I want to see your beautiful baby!!!! LOL good luck with the genetics though!
