I don't think that there is a problem if you line breed. It only becomes a problem after many generations. Like Dante said, many people are breeding related birds without even knowing it, and there are no adverse effects. For instance, someone sells 5 siblings to a petshop and another person buys 2 of them and breeds them. With humans it is a bad, bad idea, with birds, no problemo.

Elana, birds like finches have tiny little brains and operate mostly on instinct. Parrots have a bit more grey matter though.

I once had an accidental breeding between brother and sister, and the one baby produced was just fine. Line breeding can be a very useful tool, but careful records need to be kept, and outcrossing needs to be done frequently. IMO, line breeding is not for the beginner.

I once read a perfect statement about line breeding. When it is successful, it is called line breeding. When it is not, it is called inbreeding.

I would say in the wild the birds do not know their mate could be their sibling or possible cousin, parent, or grand parent!!!

I guess it really is not recommended in the long run. But if you are trying to produce a specific trait or body type for confirmation then it may be OK. Maybe every so many generations so they do not become retarded or genetically weak.

I know people who breed Game Cocks will line breed. They breed father/daughter and mother/son. Then cross back daughter/uncle and son/aunt... Back and forth until they get their desired results.

People who raise pigeons/doves usually have two babies in a clutch. They are usually a M/F pair "usually ". The sell those later as a pair. People continue to breed from that pair and so on. May not see a genetic issue for years, and these birds are bro/sis pairs.

josh1810 you've made some good points as well... If done responsibly and monitored linebreeding (I would not use the particular phrase "incest" as that is humanizing the birds) can have great assets to a flock or mutation. Now as you stated accidents do happen and birds can be bred without even knowing they're related! No health problems are going to show up immediately..
