Odd Gouldian Coloring

Post by Rox » Mon Oct 26, 2015 8:23 am

This one is a first for me. Parents were bred by myself, normal green backs (unrelated lines) and they had 3 good size clutches this year, all normal green backs. Except for this one from the last clutch in July....

Please help with this coloring, I'm clueless as to what is going on!

Wow, that's interesting. The feathers look short so you are seeing more of the feather below it then normal.
Could it be stress bars in the feathers?

debbie276 I also thought about stress bars but I'm not sure. It's stomach is almost white compared to the others. I'm incredibly curious to see how it molts out.

Some more pic's I just took

Just looked. Awesome. Have no idea! I will send to a friend if you don't mind and see what he thinks. Very weird and cool. We will all have to patiently wait and see what it turns into.....

monotwine thanks, I appreciate it!!

I also asked on a group on FB. So far, they are also clueless with one person suggesting that it will probably molt out to normal green.

Will just have to wait and see :D

Yeah sometimes weird colours come out when they juvies. I had this one once...
Next season she went normal green. She was a weaker bird and the following year died, so we will never know what that was all about.
She was the second from the back with the blue-green feathers

@Rox

Those two toned feathers, are fascinating. They make me think of Owl feathers...
As to the white tummy... I had one chick like that as well. It took her forever to get her yellow colouring, and she ended up never truly coming out of her molt, remaining patchy, and regrettably dying at approximately ten months or there abouts.

I certainly hope that will not be the case with your baby.

Good luck

I won't lie, there has been a few times that this one looked more puffed up than normal and just generally 'off' but so far it has pulled through. And considering that it's 34'C today, the molting is in full swing!

Shame, they all look so ratty right now :)

LOL..... They all have to go through that stage. Have to have a caterpillar, before you can have a butterfly :-D.

I hope your little one pulls through, and just maybe it'll be a new mutation for you (fingers crossed). Wouldn't that be something?

Hi Elana, it's doing fine thanks, still funny looking :P I was a bit worried about it as we hit a typical spring cold front yesterday (we went from 34'C on Tuesday to 13' and rain yesterday...) but it looked ok this morning.

It's still behind on it's molt compared to the others, so we will just have to wait and see :)
