Head color inheritance

Post by Jason in TX » Sat Feb 20, 2016 6:42 pm

I tried looking at finchinfo but can't figure out what I will get out of a current clutch. Mom is a RH WB GB and dad is a OH PB GB. What will this give me? Thanks!

Unless there are hidden genes you will get all (male and female) RH/YH.PB/WB.Green chick's
RedHead split to YellowHead.PurpleBreast split to WhiteBreast.Green body

I'm a moderately smart fellow, but have never spent time studying genetics, so it's confusing. You said I will end up with YH/RH babies. I'm still not clear, will I possibly end up with RH cocks? Is it just random between RH and OH? I'm hoping for at least one RH cock. The rest will be sold.

All (male and female) RH/YH = Red Head split to Yellow Head
All chicks will be visually red head but will have hidden yellow head genes.

All (male and female) PB/WB = Purple Breast split to White Breast
All chicks will have purple breast but also they will have hidden white breast genes.

Conclusion: Visually, all male and female chicks will be red head, purple breast, green back (unless the parents have some hidden genes)
I love Gouldian Finches.

That clarified it. Thanks Sam! I didn't know that the / symbol meant split to. I do know what that means! :)

You said I will end up with YH/RH babies.
You will have RH/YH chick's which means RedHead split to YellowHead
RedHead split to YellowHead.PurpleBreast split to WhiteBreast.Green body
Sorry, I followed up with the quote above to explain better.
The "/" always means "split to" I use a "." Between head.breast.body colors
You should get the colors you want with that pair.

now if the dad is split already (hidden yellow (visually orange) and/or black head genes but appears red), you could end up other head colors in the offspring.
