Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
Sometimes I have a really hard time deciphering between the two. YH is way rarer though, correct? Or maybe that statistic is for the natural population, not captive.
I can pretty easily identify a normal Red male and female, but other colored backs become a little more ambiguous for me. Is there a site showing you images of the reds vs the yellows in colorings other than green?
For example, I don't know if this male on the right is a RH or a YH:

I assume the top picture and the birds in the second picture looking right is the same bird. They are both RH. RH and BH birds will both have red tipped beaks, YH will have a yellow tipped beak.
The bird in the first picture is a SF Pastel just in case you were unaware.
Very nice birds

From your post, I wasn't sure if your talking about the Head colour, or the Back colour.
When it comes to head colour, in normal colored birds, Red, is red, or in some cases almost black, with just a few red feathers here and there. Yellow, is either yellowish, or orange (still called yellow). Black, is solid velvety black.
In some different colored mutations, things change, where certain colours can't be expressed by that particular mutation.
Did I get it right debbie276 ?

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
It can be tough to tell by the tint of red/orange/yellow at times, that is why it's so much easier to know from the beak tip color. Only YH have yellow tipped beaks.

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
Hi Debbie and all,
I have 2 YB from last years hatch that came out almost all yellow. They both have red beaks, white heads, yellow back and white breast and yellow front. They're a great color contrast to my other birds but just wondering if this is an unusual Gouldian mutation and how you would recommend pairing them up with other color combinations. . The dad is a grey head yellow back. Thanks
Paul

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
They are BH.WB.Pastel (BlackHead.WhiteBreast.Pastel) The Pastel green prevents the color black so all black areas are visually white. A common mutation.
Their father is a SF Pastel because of the WB the body is visually yellow instead of light green. And because he only has 1 Pastel gene all black areas are gray instead of white.
Very pretty birds

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
Thank you Debbie,
These two may be a common mutations but I'm still not sure how to match them up. i guess a GB normal female will produce more YB off spring with these two yellow birds...right?
What would be the result if i searched for two YBack, Ybreast females for these guys? Is there such a bird as an all yellow with a dark yellow front?

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
SF (Single Factor) refers to having only a Single Pastel gene. Hens will be yellow bodied but males need 2 Pastel genes to be yellow bodied. Having only 1 Pastel gene means he's not Green nor yellow bodied but instead somewhere in between making him a lighter green color. Because there's only one Pastel gene the blocking of black is also not complete so all black areas are gray.

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
A normal Green hen with Pastel males will only give you Pastel hens and SF Pastel males (like the father)i guess a GB normal female will produce more YB off spring with these two yellow birds...right?
In order to get Pastel males you have to have two birds with at least one pastel gene. Each male chick needs to get a pastel gene from each parent, so you would need to breed a Pastel male with a Pastel hen.
There is no such thing as a yellow breasted gouldian only Purple, Lilac and White. What would be the result if i searched for two YBack, Ybreast females for these guys? Is there such a bird as an all yellow with a dark yellow front?
Dark yellow belly is an indication of a male, a hens belly is much lighter yellow.

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
The hen is a BH WB GB. Here's the pair as they were set up last year. My latest acquisition this Saturday is a pair of Blues. The male is actually another YB but this time RH split to blue. Expensive birds so they will be set up in a separate flight in the garage built as an ICU and Quarantine flight. What were the colors of the hen that produced these chick's?

Re: Red Vs. Yellow Head Gouldians
Hate to tell you but the Pastel chicks are both hens. You can't get a visually yellow male with a SF Pastel and Green hen. The male chicks need 2 pastel genes but can only get one (from the male) therefore if you have visually yellow birds they are hens. All male chicks will be like the father SF Pastel or Green and hens will be Pastel and/or GreenThe hen is a BH WB GB. Here's the pair as they were set up last year.
