I met a guy at a local bird fair not long ago who happened to be a fellow gouldian breeder.

I asked him about trading birds for blood lines and the response I got was not an encouraging one.

He said he'd only trade for a Yellow Back, White Breast, Orange Head WITH split for blue genes.

Do-able, but takes some good planning I think.

Everyone has their preferences on what mutations they like. When I first started, I only liked the normals. I didn't even like the white breasted normals. Now I prefer something different.

Well that and I know exactly what he's doing... Breeding them with Blue backs for Silvers and selling the silvers for about $200 each at bird fairs (he had 1 left as I was talking with him and I happened to ask).

I see nothing wrong with that as long as he is breeding healthy birds. A gouldian friend of mine has 150 birds. He breeds all different colors and when he sells them at the bird marts, he sure makes a lot of money. But, it's not a money maker for him....it's mainly to recoup costs.

I never said there was anything wrong with it per-say. I'm just expressing my frustration as I'm finding it hard to trade for blood lines. I find myself having to buy new birds instead of being able to trade for them.

We ourselves are very specific in what we are looking for at times, but are often willing to trade for new blood lines if the birds have good confirmation. Proportions and lines are our first consideration over genetics. We are often in St. Louis shipping/picking up birds at Delta, and making deliveries to our St. Louis customers while we are in the area. We just attended the GCCBC bird fair in the Chicago area so what we have curently available is limited, but we will have birds coming up in the next 2-3 months.
