Java Finches

Post by Icearstorm » Tue Jun 27, 2017 6:52 pm

With other birds, such as society finches, white birds are either albino (recessive), or leucistic/piebald (codominant); however, many white Java finches go through several moults before turning fully white, making me think that a different gene is at play. I have a white female and a normal-colored male with a small pie mark under his bill (single-factor pied?). What offspring could I expect from this pairing?

Thank you. The female has red eyes, so I believe that means she is genetically fawn based on some research I did. Unfortunately, the site doesn't explicitly state how the white allele is linked to the other alleles and genes. It seems that white is neither a color nor a type of piebald, but does interact with color. Perhaps this is similar to the yellow-headed phenotype in gouldians; it isn't a single allele, but rather two separate genes acting together. What do you think?

Not a clue my dear, not a clue...

That site is also a site for a Java Forum, which might be helpful with Java questions.

It costs money to join. This page is useful for other genetics, but is still vague about the white mutation.

Oh shoot, I thought it was a free forum, like most bird forums.

Well, back to the drawing board. I'll keep looking :D
