What are these color mutations?

Post by Flight Feathers » Wed Jan 03, 2018 2:56 am

Hi there!
These are my two oldest zebra finch babies which are now 7 wks old and weaned.
I am just wondering what colors they are. So my first question is... Is the fawn pied a saddleback or just a fawn pied? And if it was a male would it have cheek patches by now? ( or parts of cheek patch ) Now onto my questions about the CFW. Why does the CFW baby have white patches/flecks on its head? Does this mean it is a pied? Also is it a regular or continental CFW, and is it by any chance a Fawn CFW? And lastly should it have male markings by now if it was a male?

The father is a normal pied ( or possible black face pied ) and the mother is a normal.

Thanks in advance for any replies and I can post more pics if needed!

Hi by what uhave mentioned about parents colors, the chicks could be sexed even in nest. Both chicks are hens.
About saddleback we need back pics anyway saddleback is a pied mutation variant wich could be improved by breeding this fawn hen with a white male.
About the head of the cfw the flakes are normal it is a mutation effect, it will dispear at the juvy molt. And yes she could be cfw fawn backside pic needed
Ccfw could be detected in the nest by their red eyes see efinch.com for more informations about it. Also if u re in the states a big chance that the cfw is Ccfw.

Thank you very much! How do u know that they are both females seeing as neither of the parents are sex linked? Or is it because both these Color genes are from the fathers gene pool meaning they would both be opposite gender to him?

Sure! I will post some more photos of the babies soon!

Here is a pic of the CFW when it was younger. I'm not sure if this will help Much? I'll try and get some more recent pics soon.

Also I have compared my CFW to a regular and continental and it looks it's definitely a regular.

Yes it a regular cfw hen also pied patch in the top of head.

To replay to question how do i known that they are jen cause you said their mum is regular. So the cfw and fawn genome can come only from dad, this one is at least split for cfw and split for fawn and all cfw, fawn offspring are hen
This the rule for a sexlinked mutation like fawn, cfw, lb
We presume dad is grey split for Cfw and split for fawn, mum is regular gr
The offsprings are
Hen grey
Hen cfwfawn
Hen cfw
Hen fawn
Males
Grey
Grey split for both cfw and split for fawn or split fir only one

The saddle back pied fawn is already taken, but I'm keeping the CFW to breed with my black face- is this a good combination?

So there is such thing as a pied saddleback? Because it has so many patches, would that make it only a pied?

Yes as saddleback is a pied variant. So to much patches will pushe her to basic pied side than to the standard variant. The best way is to breed her with white

It depends on you goal and wishe.
U can have bfcfw male wich are nice (achieved on 2seasons)
And bfcfw hen wich are difficult to segregate from regular cfw

Thank you very much! My main goal is to breed some more black faces- they are beautiful birds and rather rare to see here.
