Speckled zebra finches

Post by Flight Feathers » Fri Jan 19, 2018 5:22 pm

So Awhile back I posted a pic of my speckled zebra finch. I ended up selling it to the pet shop as they needed zebra finches. Anyway these same parents have now got 2 or 3 speckled ones now that are nearly ready to leave the nest. My main question is.... Is this a new mutation?

no, there is no speckled mutation in zebras... if they are white spots on the head and body it is the pied mutation.... split to pied (recessive gene) show as white under the chin, white spots on the head and white wing edges. Any white coloration removed on the body the bird is considered pied.

Pied acts like an eraser removing color from the body.

The markings are much to faint for a pied. A fawn pied is very different. Usually people would classify it as " color faults " but now that the speckles go all down the wings there is simply no such thing as a finch with this Color.

The speckles are the same Color of a fawn smudged white but the fawn smudged white coloration consists of a more tan Color, not actually fawn.

Flight Feathers , @cindy is more experienced in finches world than me , we can't say a new mutation before fixing its inheritence path and product more specimen of it .
pied had lots of sub varieties , from regular pied to total white going through a between transition like saddleback and the caped .
the dad has a faint fawn saddleback , mum is fawn , as i told u i have seen birds like yours and offspring exactly from pied, white , or cfw male and fawn hen .i'm thinking they 're a combo of pied cfw fawn
a question all speckled as u told them :D were hens isnt it ?

your original post with the first bird... it is likely pied possibly a combination of a few mutations.

You can not create a new mutation only combinations of mutations/result of combining mutations.

You wrote in your previous post "The mother is fawn and the father is white with a tan smudge on his back" Dad sounds fawn pied, the baby in your other topic looks pied.

Okay thanks, the markings do fade out quite a lot but go darker when wet. My friend has one of the babies I bred from the last lot.
