Confusing about my first Gouldians

Post by HoangQuan » Sun Mar 15, 2009 8:43 am

I have four Gouldian finches for about 3 weeks now. Since I bought them all young and the wife of the owner "accidentally" put all the youngsters into one large cage, I have no clue about their colour or mutation  . But when the lagest birds in the bunch started to molt, I came up with this photo
Image
I saw him did mating dance with others, so this must be a male, right? and The breast is not so vibrant, I think he is lilac breast, right? I also saw some white feathers on his head, is that normal? Can we tell something more about this guy just with this photo? Althought I had social and Zebra for years, I've just started trying to keep Gouldian, so I am curious about everything about them, hope you can help me a lot in keeping them successfully!! :)

I thought so too, but it has some other colors that strawberry finches don't have.

Like what, Donna? He looks like my male Strawberry - midway between breeding plumage and... not breeding plumage.

And yes, I'd say the Gouldian is a lilac breasted normal male.

Yellows... yes bright yellow on the male's stomach. But purples??? Ummm you just might want to cut out that last glass of wine, Donna.

Seriously though, moniters all show colours a little differently. Maybe the blacks just showed up a bit purplish. 8)

That's only bright yellow and greyish-yellow, maybe there're something wrong with your monitor :P
Liz, Im going to purchase some Blue gouldians, imported from Thailand. But I heard that they are kind of weaker than any other mutations, is that right? And what about the "white" colour( pale blue?), do you have any of them? If they are really weaker and more sensitive than the others, guess I will just order some Yellow back :P

I completely 100% DISAGREE that blues are any weaker than the yellows or greens :!:

If they are bred to unrelated Gouldians (as all birds should be) then in my opinion blues, pastels, silvers and yellows are just as genetically strong as normals. (stepping down off my soapbox now...)

Yes I have blue males and females as well as 1 male light blue/pastel blue/dilute blue/sky blue - whatever you'd like to call it, with a purple breast. If he had a white breast he would be silver and I have that too.

Light blue / pastel blue, dilute blue, sky blue -

PS - I can't wait to see pics of your new purchases, Hoang!!

Liz, that silver is beautiful.

I don't think it is the monitor...... I have viewed it on several different ones. Must be the eyes.....
