I have here two gouldian hens that I caught up this week. They are being sold, but once I got a closer look at them I was quite surprised at the difference in their head colors. I am not sure if you can tell the difference in the picture. They are from the same clutch. I am soooo not into genetics, but was just surprised. All 7 of these babies are different. BTW, the cock you see is their brother!

Red? I thought they were both orange heads.
See, I told you I know nothing about genetics. The dad is an orange head. Mom is black......

Did you enter the parent's information in the Genetic Forecaster?

Dad is oh/pb/yb that is split to blue.
Mom is bh/pb/nb.....
There were six in the clutch. The three you see in the picture, an oh/wb/yb, a dilute oh/pb... and not sure of the other yet.

Donna and I have been talking about the genetics of the parents. I'll be picking up the Beautiful male you see in the picture Saturday.
Dad is oh/pb/yb that is split to blue. Mom is bh/pb/nb.
I concluded that Dad must be lilac breast instead of purple breast because he is yellow back and is able to produce green back male offspring. Therefore he must have SF yellow and SF green back genes. With a purple breast this would make him dilute but with lilac or white breast he is yellow.
I'm new at thinking about gouldian genetics so please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I'm missing something here - I cannot get a green backed gouldian to come up as possible offspring in the forecaster. Are you "sure" the YB is the father? Even with a lilac breast instead of purple I still get all yellows...
What are you hiding from me - another male hiding in the aviary?

Which genetic forecaster are you using?
The one titled Gouldian Colors doesn't have a lilac breast option.
On the one from Carlos Matos I have
Male Head Red no, Black split, Orange yes, then Lilac breast, White split, then Back Green no, Yellow SF, Blue split
Female Head Black Orange split, Breast Purple, White split, Back Green

I use the one from Carlos M.
64 results?! Holy cow! You've got the whole colour spectrum in there now! LOL

LOL
But I don't see any orange headed offspring here. Hmmm I still say there's a sneaky fella hiding in the "wings" somewhere!

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I have mom split to Orange.

No other males. The only other male I have is Sunshine and he is sitting on eggs of his own at the time. He has a mate I think he is devoted to

Ah, see? Those hidden splits will do it all the time.

There are two orange headed offspring that are molting up.
Do you really think that the genetic forecaster is always correct?
Just curious......
