Gouldian babies Colors

Post by akidsgal » Mon Aug 31, 2009 4:54 pm

I have my RH PB GB Dilute Cock with my BH WB BB Hen. I have either a silver of a yellow produced. The other 3 look to be normal backs. The nodules looked the same to me but I didn't push them as this is their first clutch. Good parents. Could this be a hen? Would that be why s/he is a different color then the rest? Thanks...

It is likely a yellow hen :)

Tiffany,
This is the pair that I will ship eggs from if she lays again as we are moving. Oh what a wonderful surprise :)

So what I am understanding is that she got the yellow from daddy. How does mom fit into the genetic factor? There is one more in there that the nodules look to be yellow or silver, but I can't see color as of yet.

The babies still get half of the genetic information from mom, it's just that when it comes to sex linked genes, the hens get theirs from dad, and the males get half from dad and the other half from mom. (Males are ZZ - females are ZW - so the males get anything associated with mom's Z and it's a 50/50 shot with dad)

So all of the males will inherit mom's sex linked genes, plus "half" of dad's.

What I am seeing about a week later is....
1 that looks to be a yellow/silver almost fledgling
1 that looks to be a blue
2 that look to be dilutes

There are 4 in all and I have no eggs that are in need of sending as they have not fledged as yet.

House is ready to go so IF she lays again I will be emailing to get an address to ship to.

This is still hard for me, but I am starting to see where you get some of the reasoning for colors.

Do those colors up there look viable?

I would have to see photos, but the male would definitely have to be /blue to get any genetically blue (silver or otherwise) babies. :)
