Here are my two zebra finches, Omelet (male, mostly white) and Poptart (female, mostly gray):





Can you tell what varieties they are?

Looks like the male is a CFW (chestnut flanked white) and the female is a pied grey.

Yes. The chestnut colored feathers under the wings is a trait males have (most all colors) females will never have these feathers. Males beaks will have brighter/darker color than the females though the orange color varies with color of the species.

Have to agree with the consensus on both the ID and definitely the names. Are you planning on breeding them? Potential for some interesting looking chicks there.

I got one bird from IL and one from WV to insure they weren't related...They have one egg already, which really surprised me.

I bred societies for three years, but I guess I forgot how quick these little birds could churn out the babies!

As has been repeated on this site numerous times. Zebra Finches are the rabbits of the bird world. We have to pull eggs or our guys would fill our entire house with babies.

Very good plan of attack there, getting birds from different sources. You literally went the extra mile getting them from two different states.

Certainly were not implying that the babies would be anything less than adorable. Just think that you have an nice base to work with there. Depending on your hens heritage, you very well could get more CFW's, since it is a sex linked mutation. We have one or two CFW's that could be split to black cheek, so we're trying to explore that avenue and see if we can get a black cheek CFW.

Regardless of what they produce, you'll have a blast watching Omelet and Poptart as they take on the challenges of parenthood.

Hehe. Yeah, I breed mice for show and exhibition (though I've only ever won one minor award), and mice are more prolific even than rabbits!
