Head color?

Post by CandoAviary » Mon Mar 29, 2010 1:44 am

I sold this young hen to a fellow on vacation here from Missouri this past week and I told him that she was a RH. He had picked up some birds for another fellow who has shown some and is knowledgable. He said that It was his favorite color BH... just the outer black ring and the center a charcoal color...??? What do you guys think?

It's either a red head or a yellow head.
Sounds like he doesn't understand the genetics of the blue mutation. Also if the bird was a black head and can express black (not dilute) the entire head would be black, not black AND charcoal.

Likewise females never have a diluted (charcoal) expression of BH, only SF cocks.

If both parents are RH and either don't carry OH or you are not sure if they do or not, then you are correct to assume she is RH.

Thanks Misty, She is in Missouri now and will be paired with a RH PB YB/BB male that he had and was just looking for the right girl. He also aquired for himself a BH hen that I had and a brother to the blue hen for his friend. She is in a very loving home with 3 other gouldian pairs and owls.
He called yesterday and said they were happy and chirping. I could hear the love in his voice for the girls :D
