Egg Bread

Post by dfcauley » Sun Jul 31, 2011 4:50 pm

I got this recipe from another post, but made some modifications to it. I no longer give my birds eggfood. For some reason they didn't seem to love it like so many of you talk about your birds eating it. When the weather got so hot I decided to try this with the thoughts it would be safer to feed in the heat. My birds LOVE it.

1 box Jiffy
6 eggs

I bake this in a glass dish.

After it cools I put the bread into my food processor and crumple it really well. Then I add the following

1 tsp wheat germ
1 tsp poppy seeds
1 tsp probiotics
1 tsp crushed rosemary

And whatever else I decide to throw in there!
I freeze it until I am ready for it.

What does the poppy seed and wheat germ do? I don't know about those for adding to food.

I know the wheat germ is suppose to be good for the birds and a friend just told me that she added poppy seeds so I decided to try it. Not sure about the nutritional value but they love it.

I know for humans poppy seeds act like an opiate and can cause a person to test positive on drug tests. For finches, I wonder if it effects them that way of could be dangerous? I don't know that, I'm just wondering.

You are correct about poppy seed being an opiate.
But the amount a finch would eat, will only calm it down some.
I used to give it to first time canary hens that were easily disturbed.
Nervous hens will calm down and sit better if fed poppy seed.
In England they call it Blue Maw.
My mother would give poppy leaves to geese that would not
sit on their eggs, it would make them drowsy and calm.
