Birdy Bread/Egg food mix

So I made my first ever what started out as birdy bread lol but it crumbles up so well I might make it into a powder and serve it with regular hard boiled egg and add to the nutrition! Also to anyone who has never made bird bread before... WARNING: It smells TERRIBLE!! I had every window and the screen door open in my house and I still had to fight the urge not to gag.

I want to try it a few more times and see just how much I can get away with putting into it. Next time I am going to try adding some dried fruits/veggies and maybe a jard of baby food or some honey that I saw other members put in their egg food.

Here's the recipe:
10 eggs, shell and all
1 cup steel cut oats
1 cup cornbread mix
1 cup 6 grain cereal
2 tsp of powdered kelp
1 tsp of hearty bird
and some extra hatched brand of eggshell just for some extra calcium.

I mixed everything together and baked it in the over for around 40 minutes at 400 degrees. Once it cooled I crumbled it up and baked it for another 30 minutes at 300 degrees to dry it out a little bit more. Once that was cooled I crumbled it down to even smaller pieces and served it to the birds. The verdict was....... APPROVED! =D> =D> Everyone loved it, especially the canaries. All I have to say is thank god I made a huge batch so it will hopefully last me awhile so I can keep that horrid smell away for a bit longer lol.

Once it cooled I just crushed it up smaller with my hands and served!

Sounds like a good recipe Dayna and the photos are great! I am always tweaking my bird bread recipe....I call it "lightning bread" because I never make it the same way twice.

There are some other good recipes floating around in the forum lately so I am going to have to try out some of those too.

I wonder if it was the powdered kelp that made it smell so bad, isn't that seaweed? The other ingredients are just normal grains, eggs, and the hearty bird, and I don't remember the hearty bird having a bad smell.

Sally I'm not sure what made it smell so bad lol but it was horrible. I was thinking to myself why didn't anyone warn me about how bad it smells????

@cindy yes everything I used was organic except the hatched and hearty bird. The 6 grain cereal has wheat, rye, corn, oats, kamut grain and flaxseed in it.

I'm going to use your idea about baking it, cooling it, crumbling it & baking again. I've made lots of bird bread & my birds just don't get excited over it. I think making it crumbly may be the ticket. =D>

Try it next time without baking the kelp right in it Dayna. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the difference in smell.

@Sally....yes it would have been the kelp that made it stink

I took all the "bread my birds wouldn't eat" out of the freezer & broke it up & put it in the oven to toast it so I could crumble it. Forgot about it in the oven until I smelled something like cookies baking........oh my gosh, almost burned, but not quite, just a dark brown. So I put it in the blender & got some mighty fine crumbs. Didn't think they would eat them so fine, so I just added some to the mashed hard boiled eggs this morning, and they seem to think it's ok.

Thanks Janine. I didn't have in that much kelp but next time I will definitely leave it out.
