My Eggfood Recipe

Post by Colt » Sun Jan 11, 2015 3:59 pm

I've been meaning to type this up and share it here for anyone looking for something different to try or for those who like me were terrified to take the plunge and make home-made eggfood.

Now I make up large portions to freeze as I have a lot of birds but the recipe could easily be halved or whatever to make it more convenient for those members with smaller flocks.

Ingredients:

- Eggs
- Handfeeding Formula
- Quiko's Classic Eggfood (Dry)
- Quiko's Goldy Eggfood (Insectivores - Dry)
- Powdered Kelp
- XS Zupreem Fruit Blend Pellets
- Roudybush Nibbles
- Finch Seed
- Freeze-dried Bloodworms
- Dried Greens
- Other ingredients such as Miracle Meal, Bee Pollen, Multi-vitamins, Additional Calcium, Chitted/Sprouted Seeds, Fresh Veggies such as Kale, Broccoli, Romaine, Parsley, Peas or Carrots, and even live mealworms are rotated through the mixture as well

I begin by boiling eggs. Usually 12-18 depending on how many birds are actively breeding. Once the eggs are boiled I crack them and plunge them into cold water to make peeling a little easier. As I peel the eggs I set the shells aside in order to run them through the food processor to present them separately to the birds with their mineral mix. (Egg shells saved from baking or cooking breakfast may also be saved. Be sure to rinse them and once dry microwave for three minutes.)

The boiled eggs are then quartered and run through a garlic press to give them a nice wormy look. At this time I add one tablespoon of Kaytee's Handfeeding Formula to the boiled egg in order to dry it out some while still providing good nutrition. I double the amount of food by adding in equal portions of the dry, prepared Quiko Commercial Eggfoods, Classic and Goldy. 12-18 eggs ordinarily calls for 1-1/2 cups each of the Zupreem and the Roudybush Pellets. 1/2-3/4 cup of Finch Seed is added (especially if I have new birds to draw them to the new food source). 1 cup of Omega One Freeze-dried Bloodworms and 1 cup of Higgins Snack Attack Dried Greens are added. In between each addition I thoroughly stir the egg food to ensure it is well mixed. Lastly I add any other ingredients I want to add that are listed above including the kelp. Be careful when adding the kelp as too much can turn the eggfood green and turn the birds off to it. I usually start with maybe two tablespoons and then add more if I feel like it needs it.

And there you have it. The eggfood recipe all the birds at Brushy Creek Aviary are fed. :) If you have any questions feel free to ask. The important thing to remember is have fun, and feel free to make substitutions. And you can always start simple and add more ingredients as your birds become more comfortable with their new food.

Colt
Looks good, Colt.

I freaked my guys out the other day
I put the eggs through my garlic press (really need to get a potato ricer thingy). Anyway, I grated carrots and beets and mixed it all together.

You should have seen the reaction...

What is that?
Don't know, but it's red!
Go try it, Alfi....
You first...
I'm not eating THAT!
Well someone has to try it, she's not giving us anything else, until we at least try it.
Alright, you lilly livered finches, I'll give it a try...
You go Luchiano!

Grosssss! He's actually eating that, whatever it is...
Well, it can't be that bad, he's still eating...
Yea, and he's still alive....

We'd better give it a try, before that big orange hog eats it all.

Last one to the plate is a...... hey wait for me!!!!

Yumm yumm yummmm !!!!!!!!
