About my canary's nest...

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

I had that problem with my societies and zebras hens. These are FF pairs. I lined the bottom of the nest with paper towels, to absorb any urine, and to provide insulation. They did not like the paper towels and constantly pulled it out, leaving a bare plastic canary nest. And my zebra and society hens can't build nests, I guess it is the males that build the nest. So I started taping the paper towels down, so they cannot pull it out. They pulled on it, but since they could not pull it out, they finally accepted it.

Canary males and females can be picky with what material they use and the only way around it is to try and give them a large array of materials to choose from. I have hens that will use only grasses or hay while others prefer Hessian stripes but all love feathers and one hen only builds her nest out of them. The pads may not feel natural for them or maybe the previous breeder may have not used them so the birds don't recognise them which in turn makes them not wanting it in there. Also do the pads move if a bird perches on the side of the nest as this won't make them happy either. Just a few thoughts on the subject.
what it drove me crazy is that the pair liked the nest at the first place- 1st clutch - then changed their mine on the second clutch that they did not like it - They took all nesting materia out then put all back. funny ha ... I wish I could read their mind ...

maybe the societies were so pesky he pulled the nest apart-many birds will not tolerate interference from other birds whilst nesting

He probably was fed up with the societies stealing the nest material. May birds will not tolerate interference from other birds whilst breeding

Hi, this is my introduction to Finchforum. I have just gone through my first nest of canary babies. The female is yellow buff and the male is a handsome variegated. He was extremely helpful to her from helping with the building of the nest to feeding her and ultimately caring for the babies. He showed no destructive ways regarding the nest. They now have a second nest in the cage as they are preparing for another clutch. When I put it in the cage, he flew over several times and checked it out. He seemed satisfied and did not try to damage anything that I had already put into it. Perhaps your male does not want her having babies! He might be a jealous guy... Hopefully everything works out for you.

Nobody seems to have answered the question...I am wondering why my canary did this over and over again. Does anyone else have an answer for me?

Hi Joy, I know that it is frustrating at times what our little ones do when we don't understand them. Apparently the answer could be one of 100 things.

I let your post through (even though you said please do not post this) with this post you now have 5 meaning that you now have access to the pm's. There is a 5 post approval minimum before direct access to posting and pm's are available. I hope you get your answers.

Good luck hun

Hi Joy
really don't think there will be a definite or conclusive answer from anyone as it could be for a number of reasons. I note you mentioned that you are new to canaries but even people who have been involved with them for a long time can be mystified at canary behavior. Hope all goes well with your birds.

I second that one Kenny is still can't understand why some do the things they do, trying to become a bird whisperer but still not working.

Your so right Dan- I was holding an under cooked cordon chick for checking today in the main aviary, part of trio just out too early, and a yellow headed star hen came down and fed the three of them in front of me. I am not sure what the story is there!!!

It is so frustrating to not get definitive answers, but sometimes that is all we can do, speculate. I don't have canaries, but some of my finches will reuse a nest for multiple clutches. I have others that will never use the same nest twice. I give them fresh nesting material each time, but if I don't, they will tear down the old nest and rebuild it in a different location. The one thing I have learned about finches, and I think it would apply to canaries as well, is that each bird is an individual. They haven't read the books, and not all will follow the rules. All we can do is try to make them happy.
