Old Canary Breeding Attempt Update

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Nothing yet. As she didn't sit tight right from the begining, I probably still have another two or three days before the first egg is due to hatch. Honestly, I'm really not that optimistic though. Thanks for asking. :) Bob

Seeing how the last egg laid should have hatched by now, I'm afraid the old guy just didn't get the job done. I'll give them one more shot at a second clutch, both birds having been put through a regiment of conditioning and fertility enhancers. If not........Oh well. The good news is that there are always plenty of canary sources around here. I may not have my beloved bird or his offspring in a couple more years, but people have already told me they can provide me with a singer who will make me forget just how amazing this one was. May have to look into that. Bob

Bob don't know if you have tried this yet but trimming of the vent may help get the job done I have tried this with many pairs and have found it useful on pairs which don't copulate properly.

Dan, I believe this is purely an age thing. Both of these birds are highly proven. The old man has fathered over 50 chicks and the hen at least 20. I've never had to "trim" but I have read where this can help. Bob

Thanks for the thoughts and well wishes everyone! I'll give it one more try then probably call it a season for these two. Who knows, maybe this old guy will still be around singing for me for another 8 years like a couple of his ancestors. :) When the time comes to replace him, I'll figure something out. Bob
