Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Hello all. An update:
Hansel and Gretel turned out to be Hansel and Hugo, as in both are males.
Not wanting to separate them because of the circumstances under which they were gifted to me but knowing full well they couldn't be housed together alone, I gifted them to my boss's mother who keeps a canary aviary room. I do mean room, as in the entire room is split into two aviaries; one for hens and one for cocks. She started breeding canaries in the 1940s but hasn't bred her birds since her husband passed away some years ago. They are now her cherished companions, so I'm confident Hansel and Hugo will be well taken care of and loved very much.
Then some days ago I began to really miss the little guys...
I told myself there was no reason why I couldn't bring home a single canary since I had a large, empty cage and more than enough time for one. I did some research, called a few numbers and got a hold of someone in my area who has waterslagers. I visited them and fell in love with not one, but two of the birds; I had to buy another cage before taking them home, but I don't regret it one bit. They are super adorable and I am completely enamored. I'll upload pics in a new thread...
Thanks for all the advice, guys and gals. I really appreciate the insight.

Had I originally got involved with waterslagers and not the extremely loud and egotistical timbrados, I'd probably still have a lot more canaries today. Waterslagers have a very pleasant, almost "soothing", tune. They just aren't too common in my area. I've never even seen one in person. Good luck with yours. Bob
3 canaries
2 orange cheeked waxbill finches
2 java finches, 1 split to normal, 1 white
2 bourke parakeets
1 american staffordshire/american pit bull terrier
1 boston/jack russel terrier mix
6 adopted stray cats
2 adult, 1 young leopard gecko
4 fish tanks and 4 fish bowls
3 turtles
2 teenage kids and 1 wife

Yes Madcat, Heidi and Fritz are the "tweedy" looking canaries in the other thread.
Bob, I know exactly what you mean when you say the Waterslager song is almost soothing. The first time I heard Fritz sing was one morning while I was feeding Heidi just feet away from him; it took me about 15 seconds to register what was going on because initially I thought it was a sweet, mellow tune playing in my head until I realized I had never heard such a song before.

Awww! Love those cuties! I'm glad they are in a large aviary and that you don't have to worry about them fighting.

My canary never ceases to charm me with his silly antics. He has become especially obnoxious, territorial, playful, LOUD, etc. since I bought him a super-sized cage. I can't even look at him without getting an open beak/wings and his "watch your back" song. I would definitely recommend getting yourself a new bird to enjoy.
