I know some members have outdoor aviaries and their birds do well. I think it depends on where you live and the climate, predators, weather, access to shelter etc.

Re: Aviary Breeding Canaries
Hi Paul,
I keep 2 pairs of canaries in my one breeding aviary which is 3mx2mx2m. This is just big enough for the 2 pairs.
They get on fine with the finches and waxbills, their size is not a problem. I have seen a golden breasted waxbill take on a canary without hesitation. The main concern though is that the canary's argue/fight with each other a lot. Especially the males during breeding season. In a large aviary, they are ok as they can get away from each other and not crash into cage sides. But once both pairs have fledged a clutch of 3 chicks each, it can get a bit chaotic. The youngsters take up a lot of space at the food area's and also interfere with the other birds that are nesting. I've decided not to let my canaries breed this season, as I want my waxbills to have a better chance. The hens are in my juvenile aviary and just the boys are left in the breeding aviary.
Another thing to remember, is that canaries destroy any plant which you might like to put in your aviary. While the finches and waxbills will just chew on a leaf or two, the canaries strip the plant bare within days. This is why my second breeding aviary will remain canary free.
I hope this helps and good luck!
