Meet Steve

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Steve is a handsome guy! Good choice. I have a male timbrado named Patches (he is yellow with a patch of greenish over his shoulder). I also had a female that I lost just recently. But Patches is doing just fine as a single guy! He's in my outdoor aviary and sings his little heart out. I noticed this weekend after watching him a while that he "copies" other finch songs also. Not sure what that's all about! But sometimes he'll sing exactly like my Societies! He copies their sound! When it comes to food, he's the first one at the dish. He loves greens (broccoli especially) and apple slices, and is the first one to attack the boiled egg mix I put in the cage in the morning. You'll love your Steve! Enjoy him!!!

This morning, in addition to his fresh greens, I gave him some herb salad. I had been putting the greens in a small dish and seeds in a large one, but I switched them around so he would get more greens, since that is what he wants right now. I will just keep a close eye on him for a while and adjust his foods as needed. I will try the eggs, too. Maybe I will add some apple, etc tonight.

Steve is adorable. My friends sons used to watch the kids show "Blues Clues", and the host was named Steve. They got a puppy (a girl) and her boys named it Steve. Now, the boys are 17 and 18 and they still have "Steve" and everyone assumes she is a boy. LOL

Oooh, another fabulous Steve!
@Sheather's Steve slays me. He is So. Darn. Cayoot!

Yours is equally lovely! I enjoyed the video. It had my bird room silent in rapt attention!
Does he have a crazy hairdo? I couldn't quite tell.

I needs to get me a canary.

Steve must have scarfed down the apple I gave him, because I never found its remains, and I gave him some egg which he picked at, but so far he's mostly eating his greens. And I always thought of canaries as purely seed eaters.

@MiaCarter, Yes, Steve is rockin' the Beatles 'do. :D

All male canaries sing ( and some females). The difference is that some are bred for a particular song and some for a body type or color. The song is partly genetic potential and partly learned which is why you can " train" a canary to sing, although the different types are more inclined to learn a particular song. Also why they can mimic finch songs and incorporate them into their songs.

I don't always look this suave, but when I do, the girls find me irresistable.
