After moulting problems?

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

After moulting problems?

Post by Sandra » Thu Oct 30, 2014 4:07 pm

Is it just me or does it seem like some feathers look 'grey-ish'?

He had a very normal 6 week moulting in August-September. He had it all ..... Vitamins for moulting - egg food - boiled eggs - hemp seeds - seeds for moulting - high potency Harrison mash food - broccoli - mustard green - dandelion greens - etc etc etc + he LOVES 2X a day baths .....

Anyone has a comment about his? Almost looks like the tip of the feathers didn't come out .... or if it did its grey.

Hi. Was this your boy's first molt? How old is he? There are two possibilities that come to mind. He might not be finished molting yet, or that just might be his adult colour. There are some grey Canaries , known as Silvers. He might have some genetic mix in his background that predesposes him to that. Check out Silver Canary images on line.

lovezebs, how do I 'tag' your name?

Buddy is 2 years old so this is not his first moulting. When I got him from the breeders, he said Buddy was a 'ordinary' canary. All I know is that he sings a lot since his feathers stopped falling in early September.

I did search on web. closest is this fellow!

http://www.worldchampionlizard.com/engl ... silver.php He seem to have the grey in same areas as Buddy!

He is "soft" feathered (also known as non-intensive, frost, or buff). In short, he has long feathers so the color doesn't reach to the end. In melanin birds, like yours, which have the brown "stripes", the end color is gray. In the clear birds, the ends are white. In the color type canaries it is purposely bred and (usually a non-intensive is bred with an intensive bird with shorter feathers and more intense color) and the grey is a lot more noticeable.

Ahhhhh, I understand! Thanks! So Buddy is all fine, nothing wrong with the moulting.

Looking back, some of his older feathers that fell in the moulting, was grey-ish at the tip. I just thought it was because it was old feathers. But now the grey on the tip is more noticeable.

That canary on link is very much like Buddy. But Buddy has more gray on him.

Buddy on pics with flash shows yellow. But in real, he's a dark green. Darker than before the moult....which is prob why the gray tips are more noticeable now . Thanks for the link!
