Sleeping on the floor

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

I have a basket-chewing tiel, too. We are on our third or maybe fourth basket. I buy these baskets in the rabbit section at the pet store, and give them to my pigeon for a nest. But Freddie, one of my tiels, loves to destroy them. I gave him one of his own and he destroyed it and went back to Maggie's and destroyed IT. So I bought Maggie a new one and he's almost finished destroying it, too. I'll have to get her a new one soon. He also destroyed a decorative basket and has begun on a second one of those, aided and abetted by his faithful tiel brother, Johnny. They chewed up a picture on the wall and have left beak marks on the knick knack shelf. LOL The Horde of Destruction! And they both like to waddle around on the floor in case anybody dropped something yummy, in spite of full food dishes and a treat dish. Of the entire flock (eight in all), Trixie is the least trouble. If her food and water are full and she has a mirror and a millet spray, her little world is complete.

My birds used to do that, but as soon as I introduced a nest they started sleeping inside it. If you don't want babies I wouldnt introduce a nest.

Trixie is a bachelorette. She shares her room (but not her cage) with a starling, also female, and a leopard gecko so babies are highly unlikely. LOL She has some trouble perching thanks to the months of one skinny perch in the pet store so the nest gives her a place to sit and relax. Sort of a bird recliner. My pigeon lays a couple of eggs every two or three months (she's also a bachelorette) and while she doesn't always use the basket for that activity, she usually does. Both the tiels are boys and to them a basket is a challenge, not a nest. My Quakers are male and female, but they don't like each other and in four years, we haven't had so much as a flirtation after the first day when Jade wanted to be friends and Clyde told her to get lost.

Siobhan - That's funny about your basket-eating 'tiels!
My guys just started munching on a couple decorative ones that I'd bought ages ago and used for storage on my bookshelf. So I don't know where I'll get more. But they've got a ways to go, as it's quite large. About a foot and a half long, about 8 inches wide and about knee height.
Someone suggested stocking up on baskets during Easter, which I thought was a lovely idea! Though I imagine it will take some searching to find a basket that's not dyed/treated.
It's funny because my first cockatiel didn't do much of anything in terms of exploring and mischief. But then we got Abby and she's into everything! Now, she takes Hunter on mischievous adventures with her. It's quite cute as he waddles behind her, exploring every nook and cranny with her.
Their latest discovery is a little pom-pom -- a little chopstick with paper streamers on the end from a sports game in college. Abby is constantly dragging it around to her favorite spots and shredding the papers.
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

My cockatiel Gracie's favorite toy ever is his little wooden Easter basket. By now it's almost completely destroyed, though, he will spend hours chewing it up and hiding inside it.
