Do female canaries tap their beaks??
I have what i was told is a female fife canary. She has a short song. She has started tapping her beak on the cage bars and wood perches. I was trying to research this online and found that it is either Territorial or a male feeling his hormones.
My question is Do females tap their beaks when feeling hormones? Do i possible have a male? She is a 2012 bird. I do not know if she has laid eggs. She has not for me.
I have recently got a male who is in a separate cage. He doesn't sing like the males i have had in my past. She calls to him and sits as close as she can to his cage. He makes chirps or dee dee sounds but no calls or songs. So now im not sure if he is a he. He is a 2014 bird. Hr was with other canaries that sang so i am unsure why he doesn't sing now.
Sorry for the long winded post. The canaries i had before this were a great pair. Very easy to tell sexes by song.

I'm not sure what you mean by tapping, I have never seen my canaries tap. At this point, the males should be singing and the females should be trying to build nests, even in their food dishes if you don't have any nests provided. How many hours of light are they getting, including artificial light?

11-12 hours. I will try to get a video of the tapping. She? Pecks the bars and the cuttle bone. But mainly the bars and wood perches.

I have 4 canaries and I've seen both males and females tap their beaks against perches, food bowls, cuttle bones, cage bottoms . . . It's pretty typical behavior for all my birds actually.

How long have you had your male? In your part of the world at this time of the year the males should be highly active and singing loudly, assuming they are healthy and free of mites and other parasites. They can take up to a couple of weeks to settle in to a new home though.
As for the tapping, mine peck at lots of things at various times, cage bars, perches, treat clips etc. but I'm not sure that's what you're describing.
