Back on the nest.

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Back on the nest.

Post by Sheather » Wed Apr 22, 2015 1:03 am

Four weeks to the day of receiving a clutch of plastic eggs in an actual plastic canary nest basket, Kari - eternal egg drowner, smasher, and inadvertant tosser, builder of water bowl, ceiling fan, and floor nests - tossed them and laid a new one of her own today. She sat steady on those duds for over a month with no trouble. Could she possibly succeed this time around with her own? We'll see...

Good luck with Kari, Dylan.

I can't get my red factor canary, Esmeralda, onto a nest. First she insisted on nesting in a tiny food cup. Then when I removed the cup and placed a couple of canary nests with felt linings, she pitched the linings out. When I placed some nesting materials inside the cage for her, she threw them all into her birdbath! I don't know what else to do for her at this point :? :? :?

May I inquire as to how things are going with Shari and the clutch? Is she still sitting?

Arama She's sitting but the eggs are all early dead-in-shells. She either lays infertiles or eggs that die almost instantly and turn murky. I believe she may have some deficiency (I have no idea how though with her varied diet) or a genetic predisposition. I don't have her as a breeder, she's just a pet, so it's not a big deal as long she herself is healthy. The longer she sits the less eggs she'll lay and the better off she'll be.

That is still a rather sad experience to have to go through. So sorry.
