Irish Fancy Canary hatchlings!

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Irish Fancy Canary hatchlings!

Post by Teagarden » Tue May 12, 2015 3:51 pm

I was lucky to get a pair of Irish fancy canaries last fall & now have 2 hatchlings. First one on May 6 the other May 7. Parents are very attentive feeding & tending to them.

Teagarden
Congrats!!!
I read that the Irish Fancy canaries are pretty recent (2008) imports in the US. I never saw any at the bird marts I've attended. Where did you get your pair from?

delray & vienneparis - Thanks.

I got them at a bird fair held by the Society of Canary & Finch breeders in Michigan when my husband & I visited our son who attended Univ of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The breeder was a retired veterinarian who loves canaries. He taught me a lot about them while I was there. Our son graduated last Dec & now lives in Baltimore. My husband & I are thinking about going back to Michigan again this fall. They have a bird fair in Sept & a bird show in Oct.

I was going to say the same thing Vienne said!
I hear all about them on the British websites but I have never seen them. I understand them to be very small canaries. Is that the case?

jonvill You are correct about their size. According to show standards they are slim birds 5 inches in length. Their song is wonderful to listen to. I am not sure exactly when they first came into the US but I know it was not long ago. The pair I have are bright yellow & beautiful. I have had difficulty getting pics of them recently I think because they are so protective of their nest & young. Hoping to get a photo of them soon.
