Spanish Timbrado's strange behavior

Hello Friends,

I have a Spanish Timbrado named Alejandro who is an exceptional singer. He's been in my outdoor aviary for about a year with various finches and 1 female canary. Alejandro had a loud, melodious and pleasing song and sang constantly. He was the star singer of my aviary.

Recently, I rescued 2 canaries, a female yellow roller and a male red factor. Since they joined the aviary, Alejandro has become more quiet until he no longer sings. He'd spend most of his time building, then sitting in a cup nest. The male red factor, Valjean, is the only canary that sings now.

I think Valjean is more dominant and intimidated Alejandro to the point where he stopped singing. I can understand the silent behavior, but the nest sitting is very baffling. Has Valjean bullied Alejandro into behaving like a female?

Any suggestion on what I can do to get Alejandro singing again?

Hi Vienne.
Alejandro, might be going into molting mode, seeing as it's that time of the year again.

Aside from that, I would put him into a different flight, or move your other boy into a different flight. I have heared, that at times only the dominant male will sing. Regarding thr nest thing, I really can't say what that's all about. If Alejandro starts laying eggs, then I would worry .

Haha. Rarely the females sing, but an egg would be proof positive that he is a she.

Before I added the new male canary, Alejandro sang up a storm, loud & often. I'm pretty sure he's a male, but stranger things have happened so I wouldn't be completely shocked if he started laying eggs

Elena, I may consider moving Valjean, the red factor male to another cage. Alejandro belongs in the aviary since he was there first, and he's a better singer.
