Looking for fertile canary eggs

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Looking for fertile canary eggs

Post by 41Gryphon » Fri Oct 02, 2015 3:16 pm

My canary hen is currently on her 3rd or 4th clutch of eggs. I've been trying to get some canary babies (just for the joy of it) out of my pair for the last 1-2 years or so and still nothing! I'm thinking that it's just the pair that doesn't have the best chemistry (the hen is a lone mama, because the male kept tossing eggs and harassing her). I allowed him to be in the cage until she was done with her nest, and I saw them mate a couple times, but the eggs are still infertile.

I've been on the lookout for some eggs to put under my hen from a reputable seller in the U.S but I can't find any place that I trust enough.

If any of you have a suggestion or maybe in fact have eggs you'd be willing to sell to me, let me know!

Generally in the northern hemisphere canaries aren't breeding now. They usually begin midwinter and go through May, give or take a few weeks.

No canary breeding now. Also, egg fertility is not guaranteed. You would be getting eggs before they had time to develop and even in "good" couples, a few eggs can be duds.

Chance of the eggs surviving the shipping is pretty slim. Do not try to ship eggs in the cooler/colder months. USPS fly mail to different hubs, the colder atmosphere will cause the eggs to freeze, expand and crack...when you do finally get them they will thaw and be a gooey mess. We tried flying eggs out from Florida to NY, NY got an unexpected cold front, the eggs froze.

Shoot, I was really hoping that I'd be able to squeeze a shipment in before it got too cold. Minus the bad storm we've been having these last couple days, it isn't too bad over here.

Thanks anyways, I guess I'll ask again in a couple months.

Has anyone heard of, or has experience in getting eggs from the UK? FedEx does international shipping, and wondered what anyone's thoughts are on this.

I found this article, which is about shipping chicken eggs, but the same rules would apply for finch eggs I would think. It seems to be possible, but not worth the cost.

There are a lot of Canary breeders in the Baltimore (Maryland) area. Have you contacted the Baltimore Bird Fanciers?

Also, maybe try the Maryland All Canary Club:

I checked with several FB groups, and wrote to one of the ones you listed above (they had never heard of Scotch Fancies). At any rate, I'm pushing ahead in gathering some information from the Defra in the UK about requirements or restrictions on transporting eggs, and will be checking with the USDA here as well.

I read in an article on efinch.com, I think, that eggs in their second week would stand a better chance at surviving temp changes than when first layed.

It will be a long shot, but it's keeping my brain occupied right now, while I wait on spring to get here to see if any S. Fancies show up in the US. :-)
