Un fertile eggs again
Is it unusual for a canary hen to lay a bunch of eggs and none become fertile?
I've seen them mating and even now he feeds her. She's constantly calling him.
Is he shooting blanks?

Have they properly mated? Yes maybe the male is infertile. How old is he?

Re: Un fertile eggs again
If a canary has consistent infertile eggs then it’s probably better to try with a new male. I actually had this problem with my male Chinese quail. My female laid about 30-40 infertile eggs yet the male would properly mate with her a few times a day. I don’t know if it’s the male or female that is infertile but I’m guessing it’s the male. So I seperate the pair and gave the male a young female and then the female that laid lots of eggs a new male and another female so they are a trio. I also have an older pair of breeding quail I was given.

Re: Un fertile eggs again
Good News! One of the fife nests has one fully hatched chick and another starting to emerge. Two other eggs should hatch this week.
The other nest still needs about ten days. I sure am relieved. Now praying that most survive. But having fertile eggs sure takes away my concern about infertile eggs. I just need to be more patient.

Fraza mentioned to take away the male for a while, then try again. This fits what I've seen with Canaries. Sometimes the hen lays eggs before the male is ready for the breeding season. Since you've had a subsequent nest hatch, it seems that might be the case here.

Yes that could work but if they have laid up to 5 infertile clutches then time to get a new male...Dave wrote: Fraza mentioned to take away the male for a while, then try again. Re: Un fertile eggs again
Fraza, I have only Canaries and they are being too productive. I've been putting in plastic eggs lately, trying to keep the number of young to a number I can handle.
I've only got three breeding pair, separated into their own cages. But in the aviary there must be some non-singing males because fertile nests kept showing up in there! Plastic eggs is how I'm solving that problem.

Re: Un fertile eggs again
Sometimes birds get it right and have fertile eggs, if you are patient and just let them work it out on their own. When I started breeding Gouldian Finches, they were sometimes slow to get going - but eventually they figured things out and produced lots of healthy babies.
Most of these were from the same pair!
