canary beak over grown!

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Justin, If she has a wet vent it very well could be more than egg binding. I thought she just had dried poop and was having trouble pooping...thinking egg binding. Is the poop being stuck also blocking. You can gently wash it off with warm water if so but keep her warm throughout. Here's another link that has a lot about your issue. I wish I knew more. http://birdhealth.com.au/petbirds/illne ... e_vet.html

I wish I could do more. That's good, hospital cage and heat...and pooping. Did she eat eggs that sat out too long possibly? I read something about salmonella causing an issue. Just thought maybe just a little touch of a tummy ache. Hopefully that's all it is. Praying! [-o<

I havnt fed them fresh egg yet but give them the dry kind. Whe i come back from vacay i will start feeding fresh egg. I.dont even know if its a she. I onky say that cause "It" was sitting in the food dish for a week before "it" started looking sickly. I hope its a girl though! If soi definately have to get her back up to par for spring breeding!

That's good. I was just hoping she didn't get a bacterial infection. Did you ever purchase Herb Salad from Laraine....ladygouldian.com? I really suggest you get it if possible. It really has a lot of medicinal herbs in it and good for all your birds. I'll attach the link and you can read all about it. A 1lb bag is a good size and will last quite a while. My birds love it! https://ladygouldian.com/Herb-Salad

Sorry Justin. I see you posted this at 7. It's been a crazy day. My sister in-law died and a Pastor/friend we've known for many years. My nieces and nephew are really upset so I've been off of here.
I tried to look this. I will paste and copy something I found. Do you have any Megamix? If not, I think first, she needs some Braggs....or at least it must be organic Apple Cider Vinegar in her water. Very important. (The post below speaks of how much apple cider vinegar to use but make sure she's drinking it. If she's not, lower the dose to make sure she is. Better she gets some in her than no fluid at all. Halve the dose then up it when she's use to it) Does she have anything sticking out of her butt? She may be getting a bacterial infection but try the ACV first. Read this.
Eating a lot can be a bad sign. Does he ever sit in the food bowl or drain the food bowl, meaning sit there and eat until its gone, even sometimes like he's looking for the right seed and throwing a bunch away. I say this again because there are serious intestinal parisites and even fungal and bacterial problems which can cause a reaction like this. This also can be found on a fecal smear a vet can due. I say it a lot but many seemingly normal infections, espesially ecoli start innocently enough but trigger events that set the stage for much wosrt problems to evolve. The sleeping is definetly a stress or sign of a problem. Yes of course it could pass on its own with help from a solid diet and added vitamins and minerals, But there is always the chance it could go the other way. Large droppings are usually a sign of stress, cold spell, overcrowding, food problem, meaning not fresh or wrong, wet spells. Large droppings can show a bowel infection is present, the cloaca. Simple definition is the cloaca and vent muscle is weakened. (This is why I asked if anything is sticking out...this will protrude out and look like a pink thing sticking out) They work like a valve and when weakened the urine is prevented from mixing properly and the bird poops less often thus larger size when it does. The malfunction or reaction to the problem increases the PH and the bird is suceptable to candida and bacterial infections, again usually ecoli. Get a water cleanser to lower the PH. A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a litre of water, or a water cleaner made specifically for this. I use Dr Marshalls KD or Megamix. There are other types, look up water cleansers for birds or lowering PH in birds water.

She isnt eatin much at all i gave her fresh chopped greens and administered a drop of olive oil in her crop. Shes not doing good at all. Seems like shes getting weaker and weaker. Justvwhen i think shes doing good she proves me wrong. And her vent is not prolapsed. No pink thing sticking out. Its just really wet and dry with poop. Ive tryed to remove it but its stuck to the feathers like a paste and hurts her if i pull it. :( what am i gonna do. I hope she doesnt die. And my vet said he doesnt specialize in birds and doesnt know what he can do

Really wet droppings and dirty vent sounds like it may be a protozoa infection and she will need Ronivet. If it is a smelly dropping then it could be bacterial. I'd contact Laraine at https://ladygouldian.com/ and see if she could expedite an order for you.
good luck

Yes Justin, debbie276 is right. Laraine's phone number is on the site and if you can't reach her by phone...you can email her. She can overnight it. You need to treat her as soon as possible. I wish there was an answer sooner than this but everything was so vague...to me anyway. I wouldn't worry about the poop unless it's blocking her ability to poop. I wish I knew more about what to do. Keep her warm. Can you get Bach Rescue Remedy from a Health food store. It's good for emergency situations especially. I would still do the ACV because it will boost her immune system if you could get it in her.

Let us know how she's doing after you get the meds. I never had a bird with protozoa so I didn't recognize the symptoms. Now I will. :?
