Meet Steve

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

I haven't posted any pics of anyone but Steve since I got home.

Yes, I had two male lavenders and traded one for a female.

O.K. so let's see your Lavendar pair, as I've already seen your RTPF hen. BTW, I loved all the texts yesterday about what she was doing. So cute!

Back to Steve, I have a question. Since I brought him home, he has hardly touched any of the seed I've given him. It's a good canary mix with some of my finch seed thrown in. He has only really eaten the greens, and I've found that I need to give him quite a bit. I'm wondering if he feels he is lacking nutrients so he's only eating greens right now. Is there something else I could or should be giving him? I gave him minerals and a manu glob thingy, which he explored right when I put it in. Can he have the regular hearty bird vitamins I give my finches? Should I give him eggs, or will canaries eat that?

KarenB i feed my canaries a Canary seed mix with some of my finch seed and they normally eat their favorite seed first and eventually eat the rest later. You can give vitamins and yes canaries are pics and will eat eggs and almost anything else offered. Make sure the seed is in plain view. I've of mine didn't realize there was seed in the cage until i put a romaine leaf near the container!

Very normal, canaries love greens and often get none before we get them. He may be slightly malnourished. My Steve was initially the same way, eating enormous amounts of greens. Allow him, once he's been eating well for a few days he will even out his consumption. My Steve loves boiled eggs as well.

What a handsome canary! In the old days, we used to call his color variegated-cinnamon, now I think they're called variegated yellow-brown.

I'm not planning on giving Steve a mate. Is that mean? I read they will be fine solo. Maybe at some point I MIGHT, but I'm not planning on it right now.

Borders are beautiful birds, for sure. I did also consider an American Singer as I really wanted a canary for singing more than just a beautiful bird. At first I was looking at the red factors, and I almost got one of those. When I saw Steve, I fell in love with his personality, so that's why I went with him, plus, he's just really handsome, so best of both worlds!

Everyone should have a pair :) Not only are they gorgeous, but they have very endearing personalities, too.
