STEVE JUNIORS!?

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

KarenB They're on top of a fridge, so inside the nest is normally not visible, but both parents are very tame and don't mind when I take the cage down to the floor to check on them. Both Walter and a bit less so Steve are hand-tame and don't mind the nest being messed with. My societies were the same way. Steve will sit on the edge of the nest until I put her eggs back and then go back to sitting.

Sheather -- That's such wonderful news!
Usually, brooding brings out the opposite --- aggression! So that's very nice that he's been so mellow and sweet to little Steve. He deserves some pampering! He's been a loner for so long.

Aw, bummer on the airport. Not being nearby to an airport would definitely complicate matters. I don't blame you for not wanting to ship. I'd probably be too nervous if it was my bird. (But if you ever come to Florida, you'll have to bring a feathered friend for me! LOL)

I can't wait to see what your little winged giraffes will look like! (Winged giraffes b/c they have insanely long necks as babies.) I hope you get at least one crested like Steve! That hairdo just slays me. There are no words for how I feel about crested birds!!!

I just hope the babies get fed! I worry because Steve is only one year old and young hens sometimes don't.

There are always the seventeen societies to try if all fails, someone would probably at least try and take over, but I hope it doesn't come to that!

Canaries are usually good parents. However, it's a good idea to have some handfeeding formula on hand. I just mix a little with some warm water until it's just thick enough to cling to a rounded toothpick. I don't think they need it, but since my female has kicked out the male the last time she had a clutch, I liked to supplement the chicks with some formula twice a day. Besides, their really cute...but the ungrateful little buggers stop accepting food from me when they start to feather :(

Atbird I do have formula mix on hand in the freezer.

I'm going to handle these chicks as much as I can with hopes that they stay tame as adults. As much as I've tried with society finches they always go wild a few weeks after fledging, but the adult canaries are already more tame than these finches are without any interaction as babies at all, so I have higher hopes for their kids.

I so wish my Steve was more tame. He is so curious of everything I do, and he is also interactive. When I call his name, he chirps back at me. It's just so cool. I think if he were able to fly free in my studio, he may get friendlier with time. I have let him out to fly around once. He ended up in the window sill and actually stepped up onto my hand. I then cupped him and carried him back to his cage. He has been a bit scared of my hand since then. :(

Aw, I hope your parents feed too.

I know it can be tough fostering canaries to finches because they beg differently and look very different too.
But if anyone can raise a canary, it's a flock of society finches!
