New Canary

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Check today. All 5 eggs hatched! From the picture it looks like some babies have darker heads. Cant wait to see what they all look like when feathers come in!

Congrats!! You should get a nice color mixture out of the parents that you have. Canaries aren't fussy when it comes to egg food. A half of a hard boiled egg placed in the cage every morning along with a good regular diet will be more than sufficient for them to feed the chicks. Corn on the cob (raw) is a great weaning food and don't forget the soaked or sprouted seeds. Lots of cooked sweet potato if you want them to be more orange than yellow. Bob

5 little canary babies! they are about a week old now. One on the bottom has a dark head. I think I may be keeping that one! Also theres one with lighter eyes on top than the rest...what color will this one be?

Thanks Debbie :)

Heres a better one of the darker babyim going to be keeping. He may end up looking like his dad. Not sure if he will be orange or yellow.

The dark one will be some variation of a bronze. If you want him to be more reddish-orange, get going with the beta carotene rich veggies such as sweet potato, carrot, beets and cherries asap. (or you can cheat and use color food but I don't recommend it). Bob

Hi, I'm new here and just finished this string of posts. WOW!! I can't get over how fast your canaries bread and now you have all those new babies. I posted earlier (mods have to approve I read) that I was wondering if mine were fighting or trying to mate but after reading your posts it sounds much easier than what I'm seeing. I'm also thinking I have a lot more to learn than I even realized after reading this post. CONGRATS and looking forward to more pics and info. :D

Beautiful nest of chicks! You should get a variety of colors from them. The male does look like he's been fed some color food and may lose some of the depth of color. Congrats!

The youngest one has definate red eyes...what could that tell me? lutino? albino? (little fuzzy one on the left of the variegated in the middle)

You see the parents...who would carry that gene?
