My canaries - red factor and mosaics

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Great Red factors.

When do you start feed them color food? right after they hatched via their parents or they weaned?

What kind or brand of color food that you feed them?

Thanks

Heather, maybe I'll see you at the Nationals. A group of us from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area are planning on attending. Last year, at the Nationals in Kansas City, the sale room had a fair number of canaries, I believe. I really did not look closely, as there were very few finches for sale. However, you will see that there are not a lot of sale birds at this show. Most people are bringing show birds and don't always have room for sale birds. The National shows get a huge turnout from canary breeders. So it is a good chance to meet them. And you never know, some may be willing to sell some birds after the show. In fact, at the banquet, a couple that shared our table were canary breeders from California, a very interesting couple. And my roommate at the show is a canary judge, she judges singers, and she brought quite a few birds she had promised to other people.

This is a link to show photos from the 2011 National Cage Bird Show in Kansas City, MO. The 9th picture down is of the sale birds.

Thanks for the pointers to look for Blake. That makes total sense to look for the size mask for clues of the sex... so I assume the goal is to breed for large mask with depth of color.
So do you start to color feed with the juvie molt and not from the nestlings?
Please keep the pictures coming of these birds developments... I have lots to learn about breeding the melanin mosaics :D

Congrats on your upcoming wedding and enjoy your honeymoon, there will be plenty of time to drool over birds in the years to come.. but only one special honeymoon :D

Was it you that recommended the book "Brand-New Bird" bought it and love it.. very interesting. :D

I feed my red factors the color food after they hatch. I use Quiko special red egg food and Quiko canthaxathin.

The mosaics are fed color food when they start their juvenile molt. Any earlier and you can get red in places you don't want. Ideally you want a male with a nice strongly defined mask and larger is better; you also want nice red patches on the wing and rump. Some of my red lipochromes seem to be getting red in places I don't want and I think that's more because of their father. This goes along with my previous post about rethinking who I keep for next year. They will be beautiful just not show quality because of the messiness of their plumage.

A few updated pics of my birds' progress on coloring out. Still going at it. I do know that I will be using Quiko's white canary food again for my red lipochromes. All babies were white right away and not the standard yellowish color when they feather up. The lighting wasn't perfect so on the mosaics they look like they have pink or orange colors but they're a nice red.
