Re: canary beak over grown!
Here is a link that has a lot of information. It speaks of gouldians a lot but it doesn't only apply to them. It has a lot on canker and how it's spread, etc. which also makes me wonder how she got it. Did she have it and then it came out because she was stressed, meaning her immune system was stressed. It's very contagious. Could she have spread it to the other canary at a time when she was contagious? I don't know the time she was contagious if she was a carrier and stress brought it out. I read that the Ronex has no side effects, meaning it's not harmful. I feel like Laraine told me the same thing. If that's the case, then treating all your birds would be fine. Then this link says something about over treating could give them twirling which is really bad. So...read it, see what you think. I'll look for more info. The thing that worries me too is you're going away. http://www.friskyfinches.com/cankerinfections.htm

Re: canary beak over grown!
Justin, I think this is the third message. I just want to make sure you get them all because the page changed numbers. Here's a link I found that cindy wrote about it can be used as a preventative during quarantine so it must be safe enough. I'd treat them all just because you don't know if you've cross contaminated, you don't know especially if the man you got the canaries from cross contaminated or if the other canary is a carrier, and you're going on vacation and don't need a sick bird. Also, with this bird dying, will the other canary get stressed? This is just my thoughts. I'm never sure. http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17705

Re: canary beak over grown!
Omg! Thanks so much for researching for me. I just got off work so am seeing it now.
She hasnt been in his cage in over a month i'd say. He is still singing and all so im not worried that he is stressed. I will read the links and see what to do about treating everyone cause she has been out of her cage (before she showed symptoms) for free fly time. All of my other birds are doing well at the moment. The other canary is fine as well but cold be a carrier like you said.
The canary that dies is the red factor. Poor thing
If i start treating them now (which would be a good idea depending on what the links suggest) i will mix the medicated water up for my friend to give them. It keeps for 7 days in the fridge which is the recommend treament length.

Re: canary beak over grown!
That's good he's singing. My only concern is she came down with it suddenly. I think they probably are all okay but if she was free flying, did she expose someone. I'm not sure what the incubation period is. If the medicine wasn't deemed safe, I wouldn't even suggest doing it. I really am not good in the suggestion of treatment of meds. I'm better with natural medicines. If you weren't going away you could watch them very closely. You could either watch them till you leave and see if anything changes and do nothing. Start treatment now because of possible exposure IF they were exposed. Your male had been with her at one time right...plus free flying. (Just trying to help you troubleshoot) Not sure about the finches being exposed. Or you can not treat and leave the medicine in the fridge already made if you really trust your caretaker to know the first sign of a problem...that he will be able to inform you immediately. Only you can know his responsibility level....meaning, do you trust him enough...or should you medicate anyway. I don't know. I wouldn't worry about it tonight unless you see a sick bird.

Re: canary beak over grown!
Hehehe i have mixed up the medicine and have started giving it to the birds for the simple reason of me veing gone and i dont want one of the birds to get sick whike im gona, and die. I trust my caretaker to the max. Shes been a good friend for awhile. Im leaving her a sheet on all signs that a bird will show if it is sick and im setting up a hospital cage with listed directions on how to operate it etc. She came over today and I walked her through every scenario. I started the meds today so she will only have to medicate til wedn. Since Im planning to start breeding the finch when i get back, I wanted to and medicate so if they have this "canker" it wont flair up due to stress in breeding.

That's good you got someone you trust totally and she knows what to do. I think your wise to start them on meds as a precaution.

Re: canary beak over grown!
Sorry to hear about your canary. Hoping your other birds do well while you are gone. Great you have someone who can care for them while you are gone.

Im backkkkk! Vacay was amazing! Now to prepare for Zebra breeding! Super excited. They have completed their meds for canker and are in good condition. One pair is already starting to try and nest in the food bowl haha
