STEVE JUNIORS!?

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Interestingly, Walter has taken increasing role in Weaver's care now and Steve has almost stopped feeding him at all, building a new nest elsewhere in the room.

Teehee, cuteness. Looks like Weaver will be a chip off the Steve block. Can you tell yet whether he/she will have a crest?

He's uncrested, his adult plumage is all facing backwards on his head.

Indeed, he also has a single pink toenail - the only spot on his whole body that Walter's pied genes have expressed themselves.

If you've followed other threads, you'll know that Weaver's mother was lost in a tragic accident last week, and I took over feeding Weaver as his dad was not doing so sufficiently. Well here we are at 24 days, we took out first real flight today, and so far he's still quite finger-tame, but he doesn't view me as his parent, as he just laps food off the end of the syringe like an adult bird would do, he does not beg or gape like he still does with the adult canaries. He's growing up fast, though.

Oh boy, is he ever adorable!
That spiky baby fluff is just so sweet.
He's so darn cute!
I'm so glad he's eating nicely for you. It can be tough to take over when they're as old as he is and they don't always accept it. But it sounds like he's doing beautifully!

The photo of him peering out the window is really sweet.
It reminded me of Steve's window friend. :(

I wonder how much he'll change in appearance as he comes into his adult moult. I imagine he'll probably stay pretty much the same, perhaps just a little more yellow tone? Like his lovely mum.
When they're pied, they show that pied marking straight away, right? (Thinking back, I don't think I've ever had a pied baby!) But I think they're always pied, even from baby-hood, right?
Same with crested hair, since that's all about the position/direction of the follicles.
He's got a pretty chest. I love that striping - the same style of striping that forms the "necklaces" on singers.

He's lovely Dylan. Look how big he's getting. I'm so glad he's accepting food from you. The very best of lucj with your baby boy.

First of all, he melts my heart with his cuteness. I'm so glad he's eating for you, too. It will probably take him a bit longer to wean, but that's ok. So is he no longer begging for food from any of the adults? Seems like he must be getting close to independence. That photo of him looking out the window? Simply priceless. Thanks for sharing an update. Looking forward to the next!

He/she's? Is so cute. I love his color. Does he have a white undertones? It will be interesting to see his adult plumage. He'll still keep the stripes, but the white/cream can change...my bronze canaries look very similar to your Weaver before they molt.

He is probably going to be basic gray-brown always, he didn't get Steve's yellow ground color, so there's no yellow for him to develop, which is why he's brown and not green. Neither parent had red factor ancestry. So really he got the most basic colors of either parent, but that's OK. He's adorable anyway.

26 days old now and really starting to become a big bird. He took his first bath, cracked his first seed, and is eating soft foods on his own now with gusto. He's even learned to sit in the sun and soak up its rays, like his mother loved to do.

My baby won't be a baby for much longer now!
