If I didn't have bad luck this week I woudn't have any luck at all
One of my males got into a fight with another male and flying around trying to get away he
somehow broke his leg. When I caught him to move him to another cage I notieced his one
leg just dangling off the perch. What do I do for him he just sits there I did put a heat lamp
on him. Help!!!

Where is the break? Did it break skin??

Vet visit I believe would he required as to see how much damage has been done. A heat lamp will help with keeping him calm and warm but I won't fix the leg.

Cindy I didn't see any broken skin but then I am afraid to handle him to much. He is eating and I put him in a very small travel cage with no perches so he can stay on the floor.

The action taken on this matter really depends on how serious the break is, which only a vet could advise on. However I have used masking tape on a clean break which worked very well, but you need to know what you are doing and monitor it carefully and consistantly. Broken legs can heal really well if dealt with appropriately. If the break is complicated it may be necessary for an amputation, but no one could give you this advice, whether needed or not without personal inspection of the bird by a qualified vet. Unfortunately without any relatively quick action the break wiill not resolve itself and may become worse.

Well I am somewhat confused about this canary with what I thought was a broken leg.The last few days I have noticed him pecking at his leg (foot) and at times he puts the leg on the perch. I can see him move that leg and foot. Could it have been a bad sprain I am hoping that is the case. I watch him a lot and he is all over the cage eating drinking and singing. I am keeping my fingers crossed......

Hi Sherry, just catching this post, somehow missed it. I am sorry your fellow is having foot problems. It could be a common problem with feeding protein. Does the foot or ankle look swollen or redder than normal?

It's been about 10 or 11 days since you noticed the leg dangling. Are the toes and lower leg still normal coloured? If they are not black by now - I would say they are okay and I would consider it to have been a sprain.

There are no visable signs of rednes and the leg and foot are still pink. He was fine the day before when he was in the cage with his mate. It wasn't until I put him in the flight with the other males that things happened. He and Pete got into it and I guickly took him out of the flight that is when I noticed his leg hanging.

Since the leg/foot are still pink - I think he was a very lucky bird this time round.
