Cucumber must be a health/beauty aid.

On my birds' veggie tray they get a large slice of cucumber every third day ( I rotate with apple and corn on the cob). My Red Factor Canary hen immediately dives on it and 'bathes'. She makes sure she gets there first and switches, rubs and flutters all over it. She had been going thru a molt, but her feathers are coming in beautifully. I wish I knew what health or beauty aid is in the cucumber. :? I've had birds all my life and she's the first, and only one, I've ever seen doing this. Isn't nature amazing? :) BTW, they get fresh bath water and drinking water daily, but she prefers that slab of cucumber! #-o

Lol, Judy... I think I know why she does this... She wants to get her germs on it so the other guys know it's hers and she will be coming back to eat it later!

I've had my several of my canaries do what you're describing, i.e. "bathe" on a slice of cucumber. What gets them in bathing mood even more is a chunk of watermelon! :) Bob

I haven't seen mine bathe in them, but they do devour cucumbers. I wonder if it's the same reasoning behind using cucumber slices for spa treatments. :?:

Cucumber is low in calories, high in antioxidants and vit K and a good source of potassium too. Also contain Vit B6, C and a bunch of other micro nutrients. Perhaps your cucumbers are super juicy and your canary likes the fresh stuff for bathing  .

Too bad watermelon season is over. I'd like to see that. I'd give them a BIG slice. I will remember that. Thanks for sharing. :)

Don't they get all sticky from the watermelon?

They don't seem to. Maybe their natural oils repel the "stickiness"? Or maybe they just take a water bath afterwards. Bob
