Ive been so tempted to get a pair of Canaries. But the thing most people love about canaries...drives me nuts Their song!

I love the look of different canaries, the color of their eggs. I think they are all around great birds. Its just their song(s) that would drive me bat crazy if I heard them all the time. (my husband wouldnt like them either)

SO, I was wondering if there were any quiet types of canaries, that dont sing very much at all?

I looked up a few, and one males song was ear peircing and drawn out Maybe it was just him?

Are there any other types?
I am a canary newbie. The only "canary" type of bird Ive had were green singers (and the male didnt sing much or at all if paired with the female)

I recently got Russian canaries and yellow factor canaries... they are 3 hens and a male. Only the male sings and constantly. The hens chirp but that's about it. I will say one thing though, they certainly are some of the messiest birds I've ever had! They're really sweet though, they are pretty bold around people, which is a nice surprise compared to finches.

Dee canaries have been well known for their singing ability so to find a male that doesn't sing constantly would be hard. There are a few types known as type canaries which are more based on their shapes for showing than song, these would be glosters, yorkies, boarders and fifes to name a few. These birds can in fact have a great song or in your case loud. To be honest it would be best if you spend some time at a place of purchase and watch the males and see who will sing and try and find the softest or one that doesn't sing very much. I have bred canaries for many years and I love their song and I have one male which sings very little and would pass as a hen which is a first for me, he is a boarder. Keep away from Russians, American, waterslangers and rollers these are well known for their song.

I have had several glosters and they sang ALL the time, loudly.

I think that I will have to pass on them. The reasons for me wanting them arent good enough. And I know I would get into trouble with the hubby if they sang constantly.

When we had the green singers, the male when seperated from the female, sang all day (to me I loved the sound, but after a few hrs it got on my nerves) hubby is ok with birds in our house as long as they arent loud, and sounding off all the time/in the morning when hes sleeping.

So I guess having canaries is out I will have to live through you all that have them.

You need only hens then. Canaries sing all the time. I love them!

Actually, the song of the waterslager is kind of soft and "bubblie" compared to most others. Look them up on youtube. I have had a few individual stafford males that sang so softly, you pretty much had to put your ear to the cage to hear them sing - but this was rare. If you advertise that you're looking for a "quiet" male canary, maybe someone could provide you with one. Several years ago, I could have.
One singing male in the house isn't too bad - it's actually quite joyful. It's when I had a dozen or more trying to outdo each other, my family insisted that I "cool it" on the canary breeding. Bob

Having a female canary doesn't guarantee she won't sing! I had a female who was sold to me as a 'singing male', and low and behold she laid eggs. Check this out on youtube. (Singing female). They are rarer but

Have you thought about finches? I have two starfinches and they have a very soft call/song. They are really lovely birds.

N/B that wasn't MY canary, but another person who also had a singing female!!

I've had a couple of hens that sang just like the one in that youtube video. Still no way near as loud or polished as the male's song. Reminds me of young males first learning how to sing. Bob

I love to hear canaries sing but I think my Timbrado canaries are the quietest in their song. What a shame you dont like to hear them singing.

Prettybird I have a pair of Waterslagers and the male sings very softly and the hen sings also just not as well as the male. IF you love canaries get hens....

This was an older post. I got a pair of canaries (timbrado and waterslager) they had a clutch of babies. I enjoyed the experience!
But in the end canaries just werent for me.

All babies and parents found great homes.
