My Snow White Hen is SINGING BEAUTIFULLY

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Post by ranchnanny » Tue May 21, 2013 2:03 pm

OK! I can't get my head around this......Snow as she is called is snow white and recently hatched 3 beautiful chicks and they have fledged. I have Snow in a cage with two other hens and when I moved the
cage into the sun I turned around and she was singing away as good as my male canaries.....I have had her for 8 months and never never heard or seen her sing......What's UP!!!!???????
Has this happended to anyone else?????

It could be an excess of hormones in her system caused by the recent breeding season. In other words, she is still in breeding condition. I have had hens sing when they were housed away from males. I think these are the best hens for song breeds!

Yes I've had a couple of proven hens that sang "almost" as good as some males. This mainly happened when they were kept in isolated cages. More likely with hens of true song canaries than type or colorbred. The songs have often been cheerful and long, similar to that of a juvenile male. NEVER as loud or polished as the timbrado/timbrado crosses that can literally be heard a block away when the windows are open. Bob

That's a good hen Sherry, Good singing hens never leave my place, The hen carries the song traits. Gaila Elleck, once entered her american singer male in a contest and scored high on the judges cards. She later found out it was a hen and produced exceptional offspring.

Wow that is good to know about the song traits in fact I have seen 2 of her chicks starting to sing already. She is a keeper for sure I have always wanted a pure white canary now I have one. \M/

I wish I knew what kind of Canary she is the gal I got her from didn't know. Anyone have any ideas?

She is absolutely gorgeous and definitely a keeper! What color male did you breed her with and did she produce any white babies? If you breed her to a yellow you will get white chicks and yellow chicks.

I have one white canary and she is also named snow. Am planning a breeding with one of my yellows next season. Love the whites!

Linda not knowing what kind of canary she is I bred her with a Red Factor/Stafford named Echo they produced 1 yellow, 1 yellow w/some brown and 1 yellow/brown. Currently I don't know what I have hens or cocks although I have seen 2 trying to sing but they could be hens since their mom sings.... I am definitely going to keep her.
