One last chance for my canary before adoption :'(

Hi all.. does anyone remember this thread here?

Unfortunately after all this time, still no change. I now have a hen canary too but it's made no difference at all. My male canary is still screaming almost every day, frequently like a clock ticking for hours on end throughout all times of the year (and they are on a natural light cycle). Sometimes I give him "everything" I can possibly think of, including letting him out.. and sometimes he stops when he gets what he wants, but more often than not he is screaming all day.

I don't mind it, not one bit.. but my husband has had enough and wants to give him up for adoption unless we can find some other solution.

My hen canary is an angel by the way, but she is rather attached to the male so she "might" have to go with him.. but that's all up in the air currently.

Please can anyone help me before I lose my beloved male canary?

That is awful...I have no suggestions, as I am new to canaries myself. I hope you have luck re-homing him. It may not be easy finding someone to take a very noisy bird. Maybe someone with an outdoor aviary. Best of luck to you...

Did you try Scatt on your male canary. I got a male canary who was not singing at all. A long time canary breeder suggested me Scatt treatment because air sack mites block their respiratory track and they stop singing. Anyway, my canary started singing again after 4 to 6 weeks after Scatt treatment.

Tell your husband to buy ear defenders:(. I did that to my partner when he was complaining my zebbies wake him up at 5 in the morning. I would not give up my babies. If he loves you he has to learn to live with it.

I appreciate the advice but my canary does sing, just that he screams whenever he's not singing (which is most of the day).

My husband has been putting up with Breeze and his screaming for three years now and is not forcing me to give him up, however I feel sad at how irritated he gets by the noise and so it is my decision to rehome him really I just wish there was something to stop this noise. But it seems like this is just his general call.

I've owned and bred lots of canaries over the years, but have never had one make a noise like that all day long. Just something particular to that bird. I can see where other family members could find that annoying and intolerable (and I'm a canary lover). I rehomed most of my canaries last year, because even though their singing was beautiful - it was a bit too overbearing for my wife and kids at times. Don't put a bird before a loved human. I would rehome the bird. Bob

Absolutely agree with Bob. Certain noises are just unbearable to some, it's all part of compromising and supporting each other in a relationship.

Someone that loves to hear canaries, someone with a bird room or someone that has an outside aviary

I work at a petstore and we had a sun conure who was very loud. we loved him and really hated to see him go but a older gentleman who was hard of hearing came into the store and purchased him and I really think it was a match mad in heaven. good luck. -tammy

You may find that once you rehome him, his screaming will stop. Once in a new environment they will act differently. If you are attached to the female, keep her and rehome just the male. This will break the bond between them and he will start acting differently in his new home. He may be better off in a single bird home.....just a thought.

I agree with Linda...I don't know much about canaries, but I know a lot about Behavior and often times a new environment means new behavior . Best of luck to you and Breeze.

Sorry guys, neither of those will help. He started out as a single bird, then I moved him in with my zebra finches and then a year later I got him a hen canary. During that time he also moved from a bedroom upstairs to the living room downstairs and then a completely different bedroom upstairs, and finally we have just moved house! LoL! Definitely no new environment helps this.

Does the pair have a nest? Maybe he's screaming because he wants to go to nest! Maybe, he is bored. Treat him like a parakeet with swings and toys and foraging materials and see if he is interested. I keep a radio or TV on for my birds, especially if I'm not home and that reduces the noise. I have a parakeet pair and the male screams loudly when he is trying to get the hens attention and wants to play. He calms down once he gets to play or gets some attention from the hen or I talk to him like a baby/child. LOL. Good Luck!

Articuno, you misunderstood what I was saying, I think. Rehome your male canary with someone else other than yourself. Once he goes to a new person with different energy and environment, his behavior will not be the same as it was when living with you. I do not mean anything negative towards you.....sometimes a bird living in a certain environment with a person that they don't have good karma with, will behave badly as in your situation. Your male canary is misbehaving badly and needs to be put in a completely new home with new energy and also by himself with no other canaries would be best for him.

You can always bring in another calmer male for your female canary if that is what you want.
